[Overview] This herb is also known as Yu Zhu Huang Jing, Bai Ji Huang Jing, Ji Tou Shen, and Tu Zhu. It is the rhizome of plants from the Liliaceae family: Polygonatum kingianum Coll. ex Hemsl. (Dian Huang Jing), Polygonatum sibiricum Red. (Huang Jing), or Polygonatum cyrtonema Hua (Duo Hua Huang Jing). Huang Jing is mainly produced in Hebei, Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi, Liaoning, Jilin, Henan, and Shanxi provinces; Duo Hua Huang Jing is mainly produced in Zhejiang, Anhui, Hunan, Guizhou, with some production in Jiangxi and Fujian; Dian Huang Jing is mainly produced in Guangxi, Yunnan, and Guizhou. The rhizomes are harvested in spring and autumn, with fibrous roots removed, washed clean of soil, briefly blanched in boiling water or steamed until fully penetrated, then sun-dried or oven-dried. According to shape, the medicinal material is commonly called “Da Huang Jing,” “Ji Tou Huang Jing,” or “Jiang Xing Huang Jing.”
[Properties] Sweet in taste, neutral in nature. Enters the Spleen, Lung, and Kidney meridians.
[Actions] Tonifies Qi and nourishes Yin, strengthens the Spleen and moistens the Lungs, benefits the Kidneys and replenishes essence.
[Applications] 1. Used for Spleen and Stomach Qi and Yin deficiency syndromes. For Spleen Qi deficiency with sallow complexion, fatigue, poor appetite, and weakness, it is often combined with Codonopsis (Dang Shen), Atractylodes (Bai Zhu), and Tangerine Peel (Chen Pi). For Spleen Yin deficiency with hunger without desire to eat, epigastric fullness that is not relieved by eating, dry mouth and throat, red tongue with little coating, it is often combined with Northern Ginseng (Bei Sha Shen), Ophiopogon (Mai Dong), and Dendrobium (Shi Hu).
2. Used for Lung Yin deficiency with dryness, dry cough with little sputum; or Lung and Kidney Yin deficiency with chronic cough due to consumptive cough. For Lung Yin deficiency cough, it can be used alone as a decoction or syrup, or combined with Glehnia (Sha Shen), Ophiopogon (Mai Dong), Fritillaria (Chuan Bei Mu), Stemona (Bai Bu), and Apricot Kernel (Xing Ren). For Lung and Kidney Yin deficiency with chronic cough, it is often combined with Lycium fruit (Gou Qi Zi), as in the formula Gou Qi Wan; if accompanied by bone steaming and tidal fever, it is combined with Lycii Cortex (Di Gu Pi), Rehmannia (Sheng Di Huang), and Anemarrhena (Zhi Mu); if accompanied by shortness of breath and fatigue, it is combined with Codonopsis (Dang Shen), Astragalus (Huang Qi), and Schisandra (Wu Wei Zi); if accompanied by coughing blood, it is combined with Bletilla (Bai Ji), Donkey-hide Gelatin (E Jiao), Hedyotis (Han Lian Cao), and rock sugar.
3. Used for Yin deficiency with internal heat manifesting as diabetes mellitus. If heat is severe, it can be combined with Trichosanthes root (Tian Hua Fen), Anemarrhena (Zhi Mu), and Gypsum (Shi Gao); if Yin damage is severe, it can be combined with Rehmannia (Sheng Di Huang), Asparagus (Tian Men Dong), and Glehnia (Sha Shen).
4. Used for Kidney deficiency with essence depletion, impotence, spermatorrhea, dizziness, tinnitus, dim vision, premature graying of hair, and developmental delays in children. It is often combined with Lycium fruit (Gou Qi Zi), as in the formula Er Jing Wan; if Kidney Yang deficiency with impotence and spermatorrhea, it is further combined with Epimedium (Yin Yang Huo), Cuscuta (Tu Si Zi), and Astragalus seed (Sha Yuan Zi).
In recent years, this herb has also been used in the treatment of hypertension, coronary heart disease, leukopenia, aplastic anemia, and drug-induced ototoxicity.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 9–15 g; also used in syrup, pills, or powder forms. External use: appropriate amount decocted for washing, syrup applied topically, or soaked in wine for rubbing.
[Cautions] Contraindicated in cases of cold diarrhea, phlegm-dampness with epigastric fullness, and Qi stagnation.
[Modern Research] 1. Chemical constituents: Huang Jing contains steroidal saponins, including two furostanol-type saponins and two spirostanol-type saponins. It also contains Huang Jing polysaccharides A, B, and C, and Huang Jing oligosaccharides A, B, and C.
2. Pharmacological effects: The aqueous decoction of Huang Jing inhibits Staphylococcus aureus, acid-fast bacillus 607, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, and Epidermophyton floccosum. Alcohol and water extracts increase coronary artery flow, reduce blood lipids, and alleviate coronary artery sclerosis. Ethanol extracts have antihypertensive effects. Huang Jing extract significantly inhibits adrenaline-induced hyperglycemia; its methanol extract inhibits hepatic glycolysis. It also inhibits adrenal cortex function and has anti-aging effects.
3. Clinical reports: 1) Leukopenia: Using 100% Huang Jing syrup (each ml contains 1 g Huang Jing) from Zhejiang, orally 10 ml three times daily for 4 weeks as one course. Among 40 cases, 11 were markedly effective, 18 effective, 11 ineffective; total effective rate 72.5%. [Journal of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine, 1989, 9(2):102] 2) Secondary fungal infection of respiratory tract: Huang Jing decoction (1 g/ml) 50–60 ml daily, gargled frequently then swallowed. Among 40 cases, rapid control in 32, delayed control in 5, death in 3; control rate 92.5%. [Shandong Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1998, 17(2):60] 3) Chronic diarrhea: Huang Jing 100 g and fresh lacquer leaf 500 g steamed, dried, powdered, and made into pills. Dose 6 g three times daily before meals for half a month per course. Among 200 cases, 112 cured, 40 markedly effective, 43 effective, 5 ineffective. [Hubei Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1994, 16(1):26] 4) Drug-induced ototoxicity: 100% Huang Jing injection 2–4 ml (equivalent to 2–4 g raw herb) intramuscularly daily, combined with vitamin B1 100 mg IM and vitamin A 25,000 U orally three times daily; some patients took Huang Jing tablets (equivalent to 10 g raw herb daily) or decoction of 10 g Huang Jing. Among 100 cases, 9 cured, 25 effective; effective rate 34%. [Journal of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine, 1982, 2(1):19] 5) Tinea of hands and feet: Huang Jing dry product made into Huang Jing alcohol-vinegar solution; affected area washed with warm water, dried, then applied with cotton swab dipped in solution three times daily. Among 67 cases, 55 cured, 12 improved. [Shandong Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1986, (5):47]
