[Overview] This herb is also known as Ciguibang, Cimubang, and Laohuliaozi. It is the root, rhizome, or stem of Acanthopanax senticosus (Rupr. et Maxim.) Harms of the Araliaceae family. It is mainly produced in Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning, Hebei, and Shaanxi provinces. The root and rhizome are harvested in autumn, cleaned, and sun-dried.

[Properties] It tastes pungent and slightly bitter, with a warm nature. It enters the Spleen, Kidney, and Heart meridians.

[Actions] Tonifies Qi and strengthens the Spleen; nourishes the Kidney and calms the spirit; dispels wind and eliminates dampness.

[Applications]
1. Used for Spleen Qi deficiency with fatigue, lack of strength, poor appetite, and dizziness. It can be decocted alone or made into tablets or granules for oral administration, and can be combined with Codonopsis and Dioscorea.
2. Used for Kidney Yang deficiency with soreness and weakness of the lumbar region and knees, impotence, premature ejaculation, and delayed walking in children. It can be used alone or combined with Eucommia, Taxillus, Dipsacus, and Achyranthes.
3. Used for insomnia, excessive dreaming, and forgetfulness. Often soaked in alcohol for oral use or made into syrup, tablets, or tinctures. When combined with Polygonum multiflorum, Night Jasmine Vine, and Ziziphus seed, the calming effect is enhanced.
4. Used for wind-damp painful obstruction and traumatic swelling and pain. For bi syndrome, often combined with Atractylodes, Achyranthes, and Clematis; for traumatic injuries, combined with Carthamus, Ligusticum, and Frankincense.

1. Chemical constituents: The root and rhizome contain various glycosides, which are the main active components. They also contain polysaccharides, isofraxidin, chlorogenic acid, sesamin, stearic acid, and β-sitosterol.
2. Pharmacological effects: Ciwujia has significant anti-fatigue effects, more pronounced than ginseng; it has a clear sedative effect on the central nervous system and markedly improves hypoxia tolerance; it enhances nonspecific immune function, promotes antibody production, increases the formation rate of rose bengal nodules, and increases spleen weight; it improves leukopenia caused by benzene and cyclophosphamide; it regulates endocrine disorders, participates in adrenal cortex hormone and blood sugar regulation, stimulates gonadal and adrenal secretion; it has anabolic effects, increases body weight, and promotes hemoglobin recovery after blood loss; extracts inhibit experimental transplanted tumors, drug-induced tumors, cancer metastasis, and mouse leukemia; it also has anti-inflammatory effects, dilates blood vessels, increases coronary artery flow, and lowers blood pressure.
3. Clinical reports:
1) Diabetes mellitus: Tablets made from Ciwujia, Alisma, and Pueraria, each tablet containing 1.11 g of crude drug. Dosage: 5–7 tablets each time, three times daily, for 30 days per course. 2) Diabetic peripheral neuropathy: 61 patients with type 2 diabetes and peripheral neuropathy randomly divided into two groups; both received conventional hypoglycemic drugs; treatment group (32 cases) additionally received intravenous infusion of Ciwujia injection; control group (29 cases) received VitB1 and VitB12; treatment lasted 14 days. The total effective rate for improving numbness, pain, and hypoesthesia in hands and feet was 58.3% in the treatment group and 30.1% in the control group, with significant difference. 3) Hyperlipidemia: Combined preparation of Ciwujia and Elsholtzia, 15 ml each time, twice daily for 10 days. Treated 31 cases. 4) Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis: Ciwujia injection 100 ml added to 250 ml 5% glucose injection, intravenous drip once daily for 15 days per course.
