[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: The seed contains volatile oil, whose main components are α-pinene and (+)-camphene; it also contains myristicin, di-pentene, balsamiferol, (+)-linalool, (+)-borneol, nerolidol, safrole, myristic acid, and oleanolic acid.
2. Pharmacological effects: Decoction of Myristica seed mildly excites the gastrointestinal tract, enhancing peristalsis; at high concentrations, it initially excites then inhibits gastrointestinal activity. Myristica oil can be used as an aromatic or wind-dispelling agent; in small doses it has sedative effects, with faster onset and lighter cyanosis compared to pentobarbital, and rapid recovery; with increased doses, it shows significant anesthetic properties. Myristicin extracted from Myristica has a lasting anti-inflammatory effect on vascular exudative inflammation. The decoction also shows inhibitory effects on 3-methylcholanthrene-induced uterine cancer in mice and on dimethylbenz[a]anthracene-induced papillomas in mice.
3. Clinical reports: Infant diarrhea—equal parts of Myristica seed, Plantago seed, Terminalia chebula, and Aucklandia are ground into fine powder. Dosage: under 6 months old, 2 g per application; 6–12 months, 2.5 g; over 1 year, 3–5 g. Mixed with ginger juice into a paste and applied to the navel for 4 hours twice daily with a 2-hour interval. In over 60 cases treated, most were cured after 1–2 applications. [Zhongyuan Medical Journal, 1986, (4):21]
