[Overview] This item is also known as tick ootheca, mantis ootheca, mantis egg case, mantis shell. It is the ootheca (egg case) of mantis insects from the family Mantidae: Tenodera sinensis Saussure (large sword mantis), Statilia maculata (Thunberg) (small sword mantis), or Hierodula patellifera (Serville) (giant axe mantis). These three types are respectively called “tuán piāo xiāo” (cluster mantis ootheca), “cháng piāo xiāo” (long mantis ootheca), and “hēi piāo xiāo” (black mantis ootheca). They are produced in most regions nationwide. Harvested from late autumn to early spring, impurities are removed, then steamed until the insect eggs are dead, and dried in the sun or by baking.

[Properties] Taste is sweet and salty; nature is neutral. Enters the Liver and Kidney meridians. Astringent.

[Applications]
1. Used for Kidney deficiency with seminal emission, premature ejaculation, impotence, leukorrhea, and vaginal discharge. Treats Kidney deficiency with unstable essence gate and seminal emission or leakage. Commonly combined with Longgu (Dragon Bone), Wuweizi (Schisandra), and Fuzi (Aconite), as in Sangpiaoxiao Wan (Mantis Egg Case Pill). For Kidney Yang deficiency with impotence and premature ejaculation, often combined with Lurong (Deer Antler Velvet), Roucongrong (Cistanche), and Tusizi (Cuscuta). For lower burner deficiency with abundant clear vaginal discharge, often combined with Qianshi (Euryale Seed), Shanyao (Chinese Yam), and Baiguo (Ginkgo). For leukorrhea, can be combined with Bixie (Dioscorea Hypoglauca), Jinyingzi (Rosa laevigata), and Fuling (Poria).
2. Used for Kidney deficiency causing enuresis, frequent urination, and urinary incontinence. For children with insufficient Kidney Qi and bladder incontinence causing nocturnal enuresis, can be used alone as charred powder of Sangpiaoxiao, or combined with Yizhiren (Alpinia oxyphylla seed) and calcined Longgu (Dragon Bone) decoction. For elderly with Kidney Yang deficiency and frequent nocturnal urination, can be combined with Jiuzi (Chinese Chive Seed), Muli (Oyster Shell), and Kufen (Calcined Alum). For Heart-Kidney disharmony with confusion, forgetfulness, frequent and short urination, often combined with Renshen (Ginseng), Changpu (Acorus), Yuanzhi (Polygala), Longgu (Dragon Bone), and Guiban (Turtle Shell), as in Sangpiaoxiao San (Mantis Egg Case Powder).

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 5–9 g; or incorporated into pills or powders.

[Cautions] Use with caution in cases of Yin deficiency with fire blazing or damp-heat in the bladder.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents include proteins, fats, calcium citrate, etc.
2. Pharmacological effects: Sangpiaoxiao has mild diuretic and astringent effects; it promotes secretion of digestive juices and aids digestion; it also has hypoglycemic, lipid-lowering, and anticancer effects.
3. Clinical reports: (1) Pediatric enuresis: 12 pieces (about 8 g) of Sangpiaoxiao, charred while retaining efficacy, ground into fine powder, taken with sugar water twice daily. In 23 cases treated, 4 were markedly effective, 15 effective, 4 ineffective. [Chinese Medicine Bulletin, 1986, (7):60] (2) Herpes zoster: Sangpiaoxiao slowly roasted until 80% cooked, ground into powder, mixed with sesame oil and applied topically twice daily. For infected cases, add topical gentamicin. In 30 cases treated, except 2 who did not continue treatment, all others were cured within 2 days.
