[Overview] This herb is also known as Mubie Gua, Mu Xie, and Tu Mubie. It is the mature seed of Momordica cochinchinensis (Lour.) Spreng., a plant of the Cucurbitaceae family. It is mainly produced in Hubei, Guangxi, Sichuan, and other regions. Mostly wild-harvested, but also cultivated. The mature fruit is harvested in winter, split open, sun-dried to semi-dry, the pulp removed, seeds taken out and dried in the sun.
[Properties] Bitter and slightly sweet in taste, warm in nature, toxic. Enters the Liver, Spleen, and Stomach meridians.
[Actions] Reduces swelling and dissipates nodules, attacks toxicity and heals sores, promotes tissue regeneration and relieves pain.
[Applications] 1. Used for carbuncles, swelling and toxicity, scrofula with phlegm nodules, painful hemorrhoids, tinea, and alopecia. It can be applied externally alone by grinding with vinegar or powdered and mixed with vinegar for topical application. For treating malignant carbuncles and swelling, it can be combined with Lonicera japonica (Jinyinhua), Viola yedoensis (Zihuadiding), frankincense (Ruxiang), and myrrh (Moyao). For breast abscess with local redness, swelling, and pain, it can be combined with Taraxacum (Pugongying), Jinyinhua, frankincense, and myrrh. For painful hemorrhoids, it can be combined with Schizonepeta (Jingjie) and natron (Poxiao) decoction, first fumigated then used for insecticidal washing. For scrofula with phlegm nodules, the seed is ground and steamed inside an egg and eaten.
2. Used for hernia pain and traumatic swelling and pain. For hernia, grind with vinegar and mix with Phellodendron (Huangbai) and Hibiscus (Furong) powder for topical application. For traumatic injuries, grind with cinnamon and clove, mix with ginger juice and rice porridge for topical application.
3. Used for muscle and tendon spasms and pain. The seed is powdered with frankincense, mixed with sesame oil and yellow wax to make an ointment for rubbing on painful areas.
4. Used for pediatric malnutrition with abdominal masses, poor appetite, abdominal distension, sallow complexion, and emaciation. It can be mashed with Quisqualis (Shijunzi) and taken as pills with rice water. For long-standing malnutrition with qi and blood deficiency and liver failing to nourish the eyes causing blurred vision, it can be combined with Picrorhiza (Huhuanglian) and qi- and blood-tonifying herbs.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: mostly included in pills and powders, 0.9–1.2 g.
[Cautions] Contraindicated in pregnancy and in those with weak constitutions.
[Modern Research] 1. Chemical constituents: Contains oleanolic acid, momordic acid, momordica saponins, gypsogenin, α-amyrin, cucurbitacin, trehalose, proteins, sterols, etc.
2. Pharmacological effects: Aqueous, ethanol-water, and ethanol extracts of the seed have antihypertensive effects. Saponins have anti-inflammatory effects and inhibit isolated frog heart and isolated rabbit duodenum; they cause hemolysis of rabbit red blood cells; active components can induce abortion and lysosomal inactivation; also have immunomodulatory and antitumor effects.
3. Clinical reports: (1) Epidemic parotitis: Appropriate amount of seed kernels shelled, ground with a little water in a coarse porcelain bowl to a paste, applied with cotton swabs to affected areas more than ten times daily, kept moist. 18 cases treated, all cured within 3 days. [Guangxi Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1998, 11(5):3]
(2) Erysipelas: 100 g seed kernels, 100 g natron, 10 g borneol. Seed kernels shelled and ground finely, mixed with natron and borneol, ground to an extremely fine powder. 70 g taken and mixed with sesame oil for external application, covered with gauze or bandage, changed once daily, 3 days per course, continued if not cured. 27 cases treated, 26 cured after 1–4 courses. (3) Facial nerve paralysis: 9 polygonal seeds and 1 triangular seed shelled, kernels mashed, mixed with appropriate honey or aged vinegar to a paste, applied externally to the paralyzed side of the face twice daily for 10 days per course. 19 cases treated, 14 cured. [Bethune Medical University Journal, 1981,7(2):114]
(4) Neurodermatitis: One seed ground, soaked in 75% alcohol for 48–72 hours to kill insects, filtered, 3 g mercuric chloride and 10 ml glycerin added, finally 75% alcohol added to 1000 ml, applied with a small brush. 20 cases treated with significant effect. [Zhongyuan Medical Journal, 1984,(4):11]
