[Overview] This herb is also known as Binglangpi, Binglangke, and Dafumao. It is the pericarp of the fruit of Areca catechu L., a plant of the palm family. It is mainly produced in Hainan, Guangxi, Yunnan, and other regions. Immature fruits are harvested from winter to the following spring, boiled, dried, longitudinally split into two halves, and the pericarp is peeled off, commonly called “Dafupi”; mature fruits are harvested from late spring to early autumn, boiled, dried, the pericarp peeled off, loosened, and sun-dried, commonly called “Dafumao”.
[Properties] Pungent in taste, slightly warm in nature. Enters the spleen, large intestine, and small intestine meridians.
[Actions] Descends qi and relaxes the middle burner, promotes urination and reduces edema.
[Applications]
1. Used for dampness obstructing qi stagnation, epigastric and abdominal fullness and pain, and incomplete bowel movements. For dampness stagnation causing chest oppression and abdominal distension, often combined with Magnolia officinalis (Houpo), Apricot kernel (Xingren), and Agastache rugosa (Huoxiang). For summer heat and dampness internal retention with fever, headache, brain oppression, and abdominal distension, combined with Agastache rugosa (Huoxiang), Eupatorium fortunei (Peilan), and lotus leaf (Heye).
2. Used for edema and beriberi. For edema with urinary difficulty caused by spleen deficiency, combined with Poria peel (Fulingpi), ginger peel (Jiangpi), and mulberry root bark (Sangbaipi), as in the formula Wupisan. For yang-type edema with excess syndrome, combined with Areca seed (Binglang), Piper longum (Jiaomu), and Phytolacca (Shanglu). For treating beriberi edema with urinary difficulty, can be combined with Areca seed (Binglang), Perilla leaf (Zisuye), mulberry root bark (Sangbaipi), and tangerine peel (Chenpi).
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoct 5–10 g; or used in pills or powders.
