[Overview] This herb is also known as Aristolochia Root, Earth Qingmuxiang, and White Qingmuxiang Root. It is the root of Aristolochia debilis Seib. et Zucc., a plant of the Aristolochiaceae family. It is mainly produced in Jiangsu, Anhui, Zhejiang, Shandong, Jiangxi, Henan, Guangdong, Guangxi, and other regions. The roots are harvested in autumn and winter when the stems and leaves wither, with fibrous roots and soil removed, then dried in the sun.

[Properties] Taste: acrid, bitter; nature: cold; slight toxicity. Channels entered: Lung, Stomach, Liver.

[Actions] Promotes qi circulation and relieves pain; detoxifies and reduces swelling.

[Applications]
1. Used for stabbing pain in the chest and hypochondrium, epigastric and abdominal distension and pain, and hernia pain caused by qi stagnation in the liver and stomach. Often used together with Xiangfu (Cyperus rotundus), Chuanlianzi (Melia toosendan), and Yanhusuo (Corydalis yanhusuo). For hernia pain, it can be combined with Wuyao (Lindera aggregata), Xiaohuixiang (Foeniculum vulgare), and Juqihuo.
2. Used for damp-heat dysentery and accumulation stagnation abdominal pain, often combined with Binglang (Areca catechu) and Huanglian (Coptis chinensis). For summer diarrhea and abdominal pain caused by improper diet and internal injury from summer heat and dampness, it can be combined with Huoxiang (Agastache rugosa), Peilan (Eupatorium fortunei), and Huanglian.
3. Used for toxic sores and swellings, snake and insect bites, and damp skin ulcers. It can be ground into powder and mixed with water for topical application or pounded fresh for poultice. For snake and insect bites, it can also be decocted with Baizhi (Angelica dahurica) for oral administration to detoxify, or mixed with realgar for topical application. Recently, it has shown certain efficacy in treating chronic osteomyelitis, chronic abscesses, and fistulas.
Additionally, this herb has antihypertensive effects and can be used alone or in compound formulas for treating hypertension.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 3–9 g; powder, 1.5–2.0 g, 2–3 times daily. External use: appropriate amount, ground into powder and applied topically; or juice applied externally.

[Cautions] Use with caution in patients with spleen and stomach deficiency cold. Avoid overdose or prolonged use to prevent gastrointestinal reactions such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal distension, abdominal pain, bitter mouth, and dry mouth.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: The root contains aristolochic acids A, B, and C; 7-hydroxyaristolochic acid A; 7-methoxyaristolochic acid A; aristolochic acid C6 methyl ether; aristolochic acid A methyl ester; aristolochic acid D6 methyl ether; N-hexose glycoside of aristolochic lactam; qingmuxiang acid; and allantoin. The underground parts (tuberous roots) contain nine aristolochane-type sesquiterpenes, 3-oxoaristolochane, fenfangjine, and lunhuanteng phenolic alkaloids. Related species such as Northern Aristolochia root contain allantoin, aristolochic acids A and E, magnoflorine, β-sitosterol, and carotenoid glycosides. Additionally, they contain 4,5-dioxo-dehydropapaverine and guanyinlianmin alkaloids.
2. Pharmacological effects: Qingmuxiang has analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects, which increase with dosage; its decoction or extracts moderately inhibit isolated rabbit intestines and mildly inhibit intestines or intestinal fistulas in vivo at high doses; the active ingredient magnoflorine administered intravenously or orally shows significant antihypertensive effects in anesthetized dogs, unanesthetized white rats, and renal hypertensive dogs, especially lowering diastolic blood pressure; total alkaloids of Qingmuxiang exhibit varying degrees of inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and Proteus species in vitro; Qingmuxiang volatile oil has anthelmintic effects against pig roundworms; decoctions, fluid extracts, and hydrochloric acid extracts have sedative effects on mice.
3. Clinical reports: 1) Helicobacter pylori-infected gastritis: Qingmuxiang granules were used to treat 30 cases for one 4-week course, resulting in an effective rate of 86.7%, H. pylori clearance rate of 73.3%, and eradication rate of 86.4%. [Anhui Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinical, 1998, 10(6): 352] 2) Superficial second-degree burns: 100 g of Qingmuxiang was ground into fine powder and mixed with 100 g of Vaseline or 200 ml of sesame oil before use. After wound cleaning, the paste was gently applied with a sterile cotton swab once daily, changing dressings accordingly. Among 47 cases treated, 30 formed a light yellow soft thin film on the wound surface after one day, which gradually liquefied and fell off in 6–8 days.
