[Overview] This herb is also known as Shan Ji Mi, Bamboo Leaf Ophiopogon, Dan Zhu Mi, and Wild Ophiopogon. It is the stem and leaves of Lophatherum gracile Brongn., a plant of the Poaceae family. It is mainly produced in Zhejiang, Anhui, Hunan, Sichuan, Hubei, Guangdong, and other regions, with Zhejiang having the largest output and best quality, known as “Hang Zhu Ye.” It is harvested before the ears emerge in summer and dried in the sun.

[Properties] Taste: sweet and bland; nature: cold. Enters the Heart, Stomach, and Lung meridians.

[Actions] Clears heat and relieves vexation; promotes urination and unblocks strangury.

[Applications]
1. Used for febrile diseases with vexation and thirst. For externally contracted febrile diseases with vexation and thirst belonging to the Qi level, it is often combined with Gypsum Fibrosum (Shi Gao), Anemarrhena Rhizome (Zhi Mu), and Reed Rhizome (Lu Gen). For febrile diseases with yin injury and deficient heat causing vexation and thirst, it can be combined with Ophiopogon Root (Mai Dong), Asparagus Tuber (Tian Dong), and Dendrobium (Shi Hu).
2. Used for excessive fire in the Heart and Stomach causing mouth and tongue ulcers and painful, reddish, scanty urination. For mouth ulcers and toothache, it is often combined with Coptis Rhizome (Huang Lian), Forsythia Fruit (Lian Qiao), Rehmannia Root (Sheng Di), and Gardenia Fruit (Zhi Zi). For excessive heat in the Heart channel transferring to the Small Intestine causing hot, red, scanty urination, it is often combined with Akebia Caulis (Mu Tong) and Plantain Seed (Che Qian Zi). For damp-heat in the bladder causing heat strangury, it can be combined with Akebia Caulis (Mu Tong), Talcum (Hai Jin Sha), and Lysimachia (Jin Qian Cao).
Additionally, it can be used for pediatric convulsions with irritability and even spasms, often combined with Cicada Slough (Chan Yi), Uncaria (Gou Teng), and Juncus (Deng Xin Cao).

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 6–9 g.

[Cautions] Use with caution in the absence of real fire. Contraindicated in cases of deficiency with cold.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: stems and leaves contain triterpenoids, lophatherin, p-hydroxyacetophenone, dandelion sterol, and ursane-type triterpenes.
2. Pharmacological effects: aqueous extract of Herba Lophatheri has antipyretic effects; decoction has mild diuretic effects, increasing chloride excretion in urine; crude extracts significantly inhibit mouse sarcoma S180; decoction inhibits Staphylococcus aureus and hemolytic streptococcus; also has hyperglycemic effects.
3. Clinical reports: 1) Idiopathic edema: daily use of 1–2 g Herba Lophatheri soaked in boiling water as tea for one month. Among 37 cases treated, 25 cured, 7 markedly effective, 5 ineffective; total effective rate 86.5%. [Chinese Journal of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine, 1994, 14(10): 634]
2) Prevention of postoperative urinary retention after anal surgery: Herba Lophatheri and Juncus each 6 g, soaked in boiling water and taken as tea immediately after surgery, one dose daily for 2 days. Among 536 cases observed, 421 urinated within 40 minutes, 102 within 60 minutes, 10 within 2 hours; only 3 cases with prostatic hypertrophy were ineffective. 3) Multiple myeloma: alongside general supportive therapy such as analgesics, antibiotics, corticosteroids, and intermittent chemotherapy, Herba Lophatheri decoction was administered at 50 g per dose, 3–6 times daily. Among 16 cases treated, 7 had excellent efficacy (early continuous use), 5 good efficacy (intermittent use according to urine volume and color), and 4 poor efficacy (started after chronic renal failure symptoms appeared 3 years post-diagnosis).
