[Overview] This herb is also known as Chushi, Gushi, Guzi, and Chutao. It is the mature fruit of Broussonetia papyrifera (L.) Vent., a plant of the Moraceae family. It is mainly produced in Henan, Hubei, Shanxi, Gansu, and other regions. The fruit is harvested in autumn when ripe, with the grayish-white membranous persistent calyx and impurities removed, then sun-dried.
[Properties] Sweet in taste and cold in nature. Enters the liver and kidney meridians.
[Actions] Nourishes the kidney yin, clears the liver and brightens the eyes, promotes urination and reduces swelling.
[Applications]
1. Used for liver and kidney yin deficiency, bone steaming fever, night sweating, nocturnal emission, dizziness and blurred vision. Often combined with Cornus officinalis (Shan Yulou), Cuscuta chinensis (Tusizi), Bupleurum chinense (Yin Chaihu), Rehmannia glutinosa (Gan Dihuang), etc. For kidney deficiency with lumbar soreness, combined with Eucommia ulmoides (Duzhong), Dipsacus asper (Chuanduan), Achyranthes bidentata (Huai Niuxi). If accompanied by impotence, often combined with Lycium barbarum (Gouqizi), Psoralea corylifolia (Buguzhi), Cistanche deserticola (Roucongrong), Epimedium brevicornum (Yinyanghuo), etc.
2. Used for blurred vision and eye opacity. If caused by liver and kidney deficiency, often combined with Lycium barbarum (Gouqizi), processed Polygonum multiflorum (Zhi Shouwu), Chrysanthemum morifolium (Bai Juhua), Schizonepeta tenuifolia spikes (Jingjie Sui), Mimenghua, etc. If caused by wind-heat attacking upward with blurred vision and eye opacity, often combined with Schizonepeta tenuifolia spikes (Jingjie Sui), Cortex Lycii (Digupi) prepared with honey pills, taken with rice soup.
3. Used for yin deficiency edema, ascites, and difficult urination. Often combined with Rehmannia glutinosa (Dihuang), Poria cocos (Fuling), Alisma orientale (Zexie), and Phaseolus calcaratus (Chixiaodou). Currently commonly used for nephritis edema and ascites due to liver cirrhosis with predominant yin deficiency.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 6–12 g; or incorporated into pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount, ground into powder and applied topically.
