[Overview] This herb is also known as Jinqian Snake or Little White Flower Snake. It is the whole body of the young snake of the Elapid species Bungarus multicinctus multicinctus Blyth (commonly known as the Many-banded Krait), with internal organs removed. It is mainly produced in Guangdong and Guangxi provinces. The snakes are captured in summer and autumn, their abdomens are cut open to remove internal organs, blood stains are wiped clean, then soaked in ethanol for processing. The snake is coiled into a round disc shape centered on the head, fixed by bamboo skewers horizontally, and then sun-dried or oven-dried. Before use, remove any ash residue and cut into sections.

[Applications]
1. Used for stubborn rheumatic bi syndrome, numbness and contracture, stroke with facial paralysis, hemiplegia. For stubborn rheumatic bi syndrome with numb skin and muscle contracture and joint pain, often used together with Qiang Huo (Notopterygium), Du Huo (Angelica pubescens), etc.; for hemiplegia and facial paralysis, often combined with Tian Ma (Gastrodia), Dang Gui (Angelica sinensis), Qin Jiao (Gentiana macrophylla), Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia), Qiang Huo, Wu Jia Pi (Acanthopanax), and others.
2. Used for pediatric convulsions or tetanus-induced spasms and convulsions, with upward gaze and opisthotonos; can be combined with Quan Xie (Scorpion), Chan Tui (Cicada molting), and Tian Ma.
3. Used for leprosy, scabies, scrofula, and ulcerations; can be combined with Chan Tui, Jing Jie (Schizonepeta), Fang Feng, etc.

[Dosage and Administration] Oral administration: decocted in water, 3–4.5 g; or powdered, 1–1.5 g.

[Cautions] Contraindicated in cases of yin deficiency with blood deficiency and internal heat generating wind.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: The snake body contains proteins, fats, amino acids, and 21 elements including calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, aluminum, zinc, strontium, manganese, vanadium, and copper. The venom of Bungarus multicinctus contains α-bungarotoxin, a neurotoxin. It also contains β-bungarotoxin, guanosine, and phospholipase A2.
2. Pharmacological effects: The venom of Bungarus multicinctus blocks neuromuscular and ganglionic transmission in rats, inhibits respiratory enzymes in experimental mice, suppresses the respiratory center, and can cause gastrointestinal paralysis and myocardial damage. Bungarus venom is a potent neurotoxin; local symptoms after a bite are numbness, but once neurological symptoms appear, severe cases may develop respiratory paralysis and death if not promptly treated.

Note: Jinqianbaihuashe was previously considered a variety of Baihuashe (Qishe). Since the 1977 edition of the Pharmacopoeia of the People’s Republic of China, the two have been listed separately, but their efficacies are basically similar.
