[Overview] This herb is also known as Xusui Zi, Qianliangjin, and Xiao Badou. It is the mature seed of Euphorbia lathyris L., a plant of the Euphorbiaceae family. It is distributed in Jilin, Liaoning, Hebei, Henan, Shanxi, Zhejiang, Fujian, Sichuan, and other regions. The fruit is harvested in summer and autumn when mature, impurities are removed, and then it is sun-dried.

[Properties] Pungent in taste, warm in nature, and toxic. Enters the Liver, Kidney, and Large Intestine meridians.

[Actions] Promotes urination to reduce edema, breaks up blood stasis and dissipates masses, detoxifies and kills parasites.

[Applications]
1. Used for edema with abdominal fullness and difficulty in urination and defecation. It can be used alone after removing the shell and oil, taken orally, or combined with Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma). For generalized edema with asthma and chest tightness, it can be combined with Bing Lang (Arecae Semen), Han Fang Ji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix), and Ting Li Zi (Lepidii Semen), as in the formula Xusui Zi Wan (续随子丸). In modern times, Semen Euphorbiae has been used to treat ascites due to liver cirrhosis and late-stage schistosomiasis ascites.
2. Used for abdominal masses and blood stasis causing amenorrhea. To treat abdominal masses, it can be combined with Qīngfěn (Mercuric Sulfide) and Qīngdài (Indigo Naturalis) ground into powder, made into pills with glutinous rice, and chewed with jujube, as in Xusui Zi Wan; to treat blood stasis causing amenorrhea, it can be combined with Tao Ren (Persicae Semen), Hong Hua (Carthami Flos), and Xiang Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma).
3. Used externally for carbuncles, sores, snake bites, scabies, tinea, eczema, and skin warts.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: 1–2 g, after removing the shell and oil, mostly used in pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount, pounded and applied topically or mixed with vinegar and applied as a powder.

1. Chemical constituents include fatty acids, euphorbia sterols, euphorbia diterpenes such as euphorbiaol-20-palmitate; the seeds also contain rutin, phellodendrine, euphorbin, and isoeuphorbin.
