[Overview] This herb is also known as Puhua, Pucao Huang, Pulihua Fen, and Pubang Hua Fen. It is the pollen of plants from the Typhaceae family, including Typha angustifolia L., Typha orientalis Presl., or other species of the same genus. The main production areas are Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shandong, Anhui, Hubei, Guizhou, Shanxi, and other regions. The yellow male flower spikes at the top of the Typha stalks are harvested in summer, dried in the sun, then crushed and sieved to obtain the pollen. When the male flowers are cut and dried, the pollen with male flowers attached is called Caopu Huang.

[Properties] Sweet in taste, neutral in nature. Enters the Liver and Pericardium meridians.

[Actions] Stops bleeding, resolves blood stasis, promotes urination.

[Applications]
1. Used for various bleeding syndromes such as coughing blood, vomiting blood, nosebleed, blood in urine, blood in stool, and metrorrhagia. Pollen Typhae has the advantage of stopping bleeding without leaving blood stasis and removing blood stasis without promoting bleeding. Therefore, it can be used for bleeding syndromes with or without blood stasis, either alone or combined with charred herbs such as Chen Zong Tan (charred Atractylodes), Ou Jie Tan (charred lotus rhizome nodes), Xue Yu Tan (charred residual blood), and Ce Bai Tan (charred Biota leaves). For bleeding due to blood heat, it is combined with Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Bai Mao Gen (Imperatae Rhizoma), Da Xiao Ji and Xiao Ji (large and small thistles). For bleeding due to deficiency cold, it is combined with Pao Jiang (processed ginger), Ai Ye (mugwort leaf), and E Jiao (donkey-hide gelatin).
2. Used for chest and epigastric pain caused by blood stasis, dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, and postpartum blood stasis pain. Often combined with Wu Ling Zhi (Trogopterus feces), as in the formula Shixiao San. For chest impediment pain caused by phlegm and blood stasis with deficient chest Yang, it can be combined with Gua Lou (Trichosanthis Fructus), Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), and Xie Bai (Allii Macrostemonis Bulbus). For epigastric pain due to blood stasis and qi stagnation, it can be combined with Ru Xiang (Olibanum), Mo Yao (Myrrha), Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Radix), and Yan Hu Suo (Corydalis Rhizoma). For amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, and postpartum blood stasis pain, it can be combined with Xiang Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Rhizoma), and Dang Gui.
3. Used for painful urinary dribbling with blood (blood lin syndrome), often combined with Mu Tong (Akebiae Caulis), Che Qian Zi (Plantaginis Semen), and Chi Shao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra).
Additionally, heated Pollen Typhae applied topically can treat breast abscess swelling and pain; mixed with lard and applied to the anus, it can treat prolapse of the rectum; for sores and ulcers with swelling and toxicity, it is often applied with honey.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoct 5–9 g, wrapped in a decoction bag; or used in pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount, powdered and sprinkled or mixed and applied topically. For dispersing blood stasis and relieving pain, raw form is preferred; for stopping bleeding, stir-fried form is used. For bleeding with blood stasis, use half raw and half cooked.

[Cautions] Use with caution during pregnancy.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: The pollen mainly contains flavonoids such as typhaneoside, isorhamnetin, quercetin, quercetin 3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)[α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→6)]-β-D-glucopyranoside, isorhamnetin 3-O-rutinoside, and others. It also contains various amino acids, sugars, trace elements, and organic acids.
2. Pharmacological effects: Pollen Typhae regulates the cardiovascular system by increasing coronary blood flow, improving microcirculation, and alleviating myocardial ischemia. Raw pollen has significant lipid-lowering effects and can improve aortic and coronary atherosclerosis. Decoctions of Pollen Typhae and its total flavonoids, organic acids, and polysaccharides significantly inhibit platelet aggregation induced by ADP, arachidonic acid, and collagen in rabbits both in vivo and in vitro, with flavonoids showing the strongest effect. It can enhance physical endurance, improve memory function, and delay aging. The decoction excites uterine and intestinal smooth muscle and also exhibits anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects.
3. Clinical reports:
(1) Coronary heart disease: Oral administration of raw Pollen Typhae alone for mild angina pectoris showed after 2 months an 89% symptom elimination and angina relief rate, 84% ECG improvement, 58% blood pressure reduction, and 60% and 94% reductions in total cholesterol and triglycerides respectively. [Hunan Medical Journal, 1982, (3):6]
(2) Diabetic retinal hemorrhage: 15 g raw Pollen Typhae wrapped in gauze soaked in boiling water as a tea substitute. In 100 cases (123 eyes), complete absorption of hemorrhage occurred in 57 cases (72 eyes), more than half absorption in 15 cases (18 eyes), less than half absorption in 10 cases (13 eyes), and no change in 18 cases (20 eyes). [Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine Research, 1999, 15(5):18]
(3) Idiopathic ulcerative colitis: Oral enteric-coated tablets of Pollen Typhae extract (0.2 g per tablet), 5 tablets three times daily, combined with retention enema of 5% Pollen Typhae extract solution once daily. In 17 cases treated, the total effective rate was 94.12%. [Chinese Medicine Bulletin, 1987, (12):48]
