[Overview] This herb is also known as Tiejiao Pear, Autumn Mugua, and Sour Mugua. It is the nearly mature fruit of Chaenomeles speciosa (Sweet) Nakai, a plant of the Rosaceae family. It is mainly produced in Anhui, Sichuan, Hubei, and other regions. The Mugua from Xuanzhou, Anhui is called “Xuan Mugua” and is considered of better quality. The fruit is harvested in summer and autumn when it turns greenish-yellow. It is blanched in boiling water until the peel turns grayish-white, then longitudinally cut into halves or quarters and sun-dried.
[Properties] Sour in taste, warm in nature. Enters the Liver and Spleen meridians.
[Actions] Calms the Liver and relaxes the sinews; harmonizes the stomach and transforms dampness.
[Applications]
1. Used for wind-damp painful obstruction and muscle and tendon spasms. For muscle cramps and stiff neck with inability to turn the head, it can be combined with frankincense, myrrh, and raw Rehmannia root, as in the formula Mugua Decoction (木瓜煎). For wind-damp painful obstruction with hand and foot spasms and inability to raise the limbs, it can be combined with Qingyan (green salt) and Evodia rutaecarpa, as in Mugua Pills (木瓜丸). When cooked until soft, ground into a paste and applied externally, it can treat acute pain in the feet and knees.
2. Used for beriberi with swelling and pain, weakness of the waist and knees, weakness in movement, or spasmodic pain. Often combined with Evodia rutaecarpa, Perilla, and Areca, as in Jiming Powder (鸡鸣散).
3. Used for abdominal pain due to damp obstruction in the middle burner, vomiting, diarrhea, and cramps. For predominantly cold symptoms, combined with Evodia rutaecarpa, fennel, and Perilla, as in Mugua Decoction (木瓜汤); for predominantly heat symptoms, combined with silkworm droppings, Coix seeds, and Coptis, as in Silkworm Droppings Decoction (蚕矢汤); it can also be decocted with aged rice and taken warm.
4. Used for dysenteric disorders with damp stagnation, characterized by dysentery with red and white stools or diarrhea without relief. It can be combined with Plantain seed and poppy shell, as in Mugua Powder (木瓜散).
Additionally, Mugua has digestive properties and can treat food stagnation from meat and indigestion.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 6–9 g.
[Cautions] Not suitable for those with excessive stomach acid.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents mainly include reducing sugars, sucrose, malic acid, pectin acid, tannins, ascorbic acid; also contains citric acid, tartaric acid, oleanolic acid, mugaphenol, triterpenoid saponins, and oxidase enzymes.
2. Pharmacological effects: Mugua shows significant inhibitory effects on various intestinal bacteria and staphylococci, and also obvious inhibition of Mycobacterium tuberculosis; Mugua granules can reduce hepatic steatosis and hepatocyte necrosis, promote hepatocyte repair, and significantly lower SGPT levels; Mugua crystalline solution, aqueous decoction, and alcohol extracts have strong inhibitory effects on Ehrlich ascites carcinoma in mice; Mugua decoction has anti-swelling effects on egg white-induced arthritis in mice.
3. Clinical reports: 1) Acute bacterial dysentery: Mugua tablets (0.25 g/tablet, equivalent to 1.13 g raw herb), 5 tablets per dose, three times daily. Treated 107 cases with an effective rate of 96.28% and a cure rate of 85.98%. [Chinese Medical Journal, 1984, 64(11): 689] 2) Viral hepatitis: Mugua extract paste made into “Hepatitis Spirit” oral preparation, 15 g per dose, three times daily. Treated 102 cases with a total effective rate of 95.1%. [Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1988, (10): 738] 3) Pediatric frequent urination: One large raw Mugua sliced and soaked in alcohol for one week. Each dose equivalent to about 9 g raw herb, decocted and taken once daily. Treated 9 cases with 7 cured and 2 markedly effective. [Shandong Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1984, (6): 45] 4) Athlete’s foot: Mugua and licorice 30 g each, decocted and strained, cooled and used to wash feet for 5–10 minutes, once daily. Treated 47 cases, all cured. [Shandong Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1984, (2): 36]
