[Overview] This herb is also known as Mengshi. It is a metamorphic rock type, including biotite schist and mica carbonate schist altered by chloritization. It is mainly produced in Henan and Zhejiang provinces. It can be harvested year-round; after collection, impurities such as stones and soil should be removed.

[Properties] Taste: sweet and salty; nature: neutral. Channels entered: Lung, Heart, Liver.

[Actions] Descends phlegm and reduces qi counterflow, calms the Liver and stops convulsions, promotes digestion and resolves food accumulation.

[Applications]
1. Used for stubborn or old phlegm that is congealed and obstructive causing cough, asthma, and qi reversal, with thick difficult-to-expectorate sputum, often accompanied by constipation, thick greasy tongue coating, and slippery forceful pulse. Commonly combined with Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Chen Xiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum), etc. Formulas include Mengshi Guntan Wan (礞石滚痰丸). Currently often used clinically for severe pneumonia presenting with wheezing, cough, qi reversal, and copious thick yellow sputum.
2. Used for phlegm-fire exuberance obstructing the orifices causing epilepsy and convulsions. For convulsions and spasms caused by excessive hot phlegm, this herb can be powdered and taken with mint leaves and honey, as in the formula Duoming San (夺命散). For phlegm-congealed epilepsy with constipation, it is often combined with Da Huang, Huang Qin, Chen Xiang, etc., as in Mengshi Guntan Wan. This herb can be used to treat epilepsy or schizophrenia.
3. Used for food accumulation with epigastric and abdominal fullness and masses. For indigestion and stagnation in the middle burner causing epigastric and abdominal distention and fullness, it can be combined with Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Zhi Shi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), etc. For female food accumulation with persistent masses causing stabbing pain in the epigastrium and abdomen, it can be combined with Mu Xiang and Ba Dou (Crotonis Fructus).

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: incorporated into pills or powders, 3–6 g; decoction, 10–15 g, wrapped in cloth.

[Cautions] Contraindicated in cases of spleen and stomach deficiency, yin deficiency with dry phlegm, and pregnancy.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: Biotite schist mainly contains silicates of potassium, magnesium, iron, and aluminum, and also contains trace elements such as titanium, calcium, and manganese which have antiasthmatic effects.
2. Clinical reports on esophageal and cardia cancer obstruction: equal amounts of Mengshi and woodlouse were ground into fine powder; 1–2 g each time, 4–6 times daily, held at the root of the tongue. A total of 48 cases were treated, including 29 cases of esophageal cancer and 19 cases of cardia cancer.
