[Overview] This herb is also known as Kuanjinteng, Shujincao, Jinmaoshizicao, and Guoshanlong. It is the whole herb of Lycopodium japonicum Thunb., a plant of the Lycopodiaceae family. It is mainly produced in Hubei, Zhejiang, Guizhou, Sichuan, and Yunnan provinces. Harvest in summer and autumn when stems and leaves are luxuriant, remove impurities, and dry in the sun.
[Properties] Slightly bitter and pungent in taste, warm in nature. Enters the liver, spleen, and kidney meridians.
[Actions] Dispel wind and eliminate dampness, relax tendons and activate collaterals.
[Applications]
1. Used for wind-cold-damp bi syndrome, joint soreness and pain, tendon and vessel stiffness, difficulty in flexion and extension; often combined with Du Huo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis), Mu Gua (Fructus Chaenomelis), Wei Ling Xian (Radix Clematidis), Gui Zhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi), etc. For chronic bi pain with liver and kidney deficiency and qi and blood insufficiency causing tendon stiffness and limited joint movement, it can be combined with Sang Ji Sheng (Herba Taxilli), Wu Jia Pi (Cortex Acanthopanacis), Xu Duan (Radix Dipsaci), Shu Di Huang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata), etc. For calf cramps, it can be combined with Mu Gua and Ba Jiao Feng.
2. Used for traumatic injury pain, often combined with Hong Hua (Flos Carthami), Di Bie Chong (Eupolyphaga), and Su Mu (Caesalpinia Sappan).
3. Used for herpes zoster; after stir-frying to charcoal, grind with Borneol and mix with sesame oil for topical application.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 9–15 g, large doses up to 30 g; or soaked in wine. External use: appropriate amount, fresh herb pounded and applied topically.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: Herba Lycopodii contains alkaloids such as lycopodine, dihydrolycopodine, shenjincao alkaloid, shenjincaoning alkaloid, deacetylfasciculine, fasciculine, and other basic substances. It also contains acidic substances such as coumaric acid, ferulic acid, nonanedioic acid, and various triterpenoid alcohol compounds.
2. Pharmacological effects: aqueous extract of Herba Lycopodii has antipyretic effects; alcohol extracts have analgesic effects; significantly prolong pentobarbital sodium-induced sleep time in mice; lycopodine excites isolated rat and guinea pig small intestine and uterus; has diuretic effects, increases uric acid excretion, and can relieve pediatric spastic urinary retention and constipation.
3. Clinical reports: 1. Post-stroke hand and foot spasticity: used Herba Lycopodii, Tougu Cao (Herba Clematidis), and Hong Hua, each 3 g, decocted and soaked hands and feet. Treated 67 cases with results: markedly effective in 35 cases, improved in 29 cases, ineffective in 3 cases. [Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1989, 30(2):15] 2. Herpes zoster: used 10 g Herba Lycopodii, burned to ash, added 5 g Haijinsha (Lygodium japonicum), mixed with appropriate sesame oil to a paste, applied with cotton swab to affected area 2–4 times daily. Treated 31 cases, all cured. [Zhejiang Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1990, 25(5):237]
