[Overview] This item is also known as Cuttlefish Fish Bone, Cuttlefish Bone, Inkfish Bone, Ink Horn Cover. It is the internal shell of cuttlefish species Sepiella maindroni de Rochebrune (needleless cuttlefish) or Sepia esculenta Hoyle (golden cuttlefish) of the family Sepiidae. Needleless cuttlefish are mainly produced along the coasts of Zhejiang and Fujian; golden cuttlefish are mainly produced along the coasts of Liaoning, Shandong, Jiangsu, Fujian, Guangxi, and Guangdong. In spring and summer, cuttlefish that have floated ashore or accumulated on beaches are collected, impurities removed, washed with fresh water, and sun-dried; or in spring, when large groups of cuttlefish come near islands to spawn, they are caught in large quantities, soft parts removed, cuttlefish bones collected, cleaned, and sun-dried.

[Properties] Taste salty and astringent, slightly warm in nature. Enters the Liver, Kidney, and Stomach meridians.

[Actions] Astringes and stops bleeding; secures essence and stops leukorrhea; neutralizes stomach acid and relieves pain; absorbs moisture and promotes healing of sores.

[Applications]
1. Used for various bleeding disorders. Applicable for hematemesis, metrorrhagia, hematochezia, epistaxis, and traumatic bleeding. For hematemesis and vomiting blood, often combined with raw rhubarb and white peony root powder taken orally; for metrorrhagia due to qi and blood deficiency, combined with astragalus, white atractylodes, cornelian cherry, rubia, and palm charcoal, as in the formula Guchong Tang (固冲汤); for hematuria and bloody urine, the powder is taken with raw Rehmannia juice.
2. Used for kidney deficiency with instability, spermatorrhea, and leukorrhea. For kidney deficiency with instability and spermatorrhea, often combined with Euryale seed, Rosa laevigata fruit, cornelian cherry, and Tribulus terrestris; for instability of Chong and Ren channels with clear leukorrhea, combined with Chinese yam, oyster shell, Dipsacus, and Euryale seed; for red or white leukorrhea, combined with Angelica dahurica and charred leftover blood.
3. Used for stomach pain, fullness, belching, and acid regurgitation. Can be combined with Fritillaria, peony root, and licorice powder. If caused by Liver qi invading the Stomach, often combined with Bupleurum, white peony root, Cyperus, and Corydalis. Currently commonly used to treat excessive acid regurgitation and epigastric pain caused by gastric and duodenal ulcers.
4. Used for eczema, ulcers, and sores. Can be ground into powder and applied externally. For eczema and damp sores, often combined with Phellodendron, borneol, and Indigo naturalis powder for external application; for chronic ulcers that do not heal, combined with gypsum, calcined dragon bone, potassium alum, Angelica dahurica, red ginseng, and borneol powder applied to affected areas.
Additionally, folk use includes treating asthma by oral powder or combined with earthworm and stemona; with borneol powder applied to eyes to treat corneal opacity.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 5–9 g; or powder, 1.5–3 g per dose. External use: appropriate amount of powder sprinkled. For neutralizing acid and relieving pain, and absorbing moisture to heal sores, use raw; for astringing and stopping bleeding, securing essence and leukorrhea, use calcined or stir-fried. For stomach pain, acid regurgitation, and bleeding, powder form is preferred.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: Endoconcha Sepiae mainly contains calcium carbonate, also contains shell keratin, mucus substances, small amounts of calcium phosphate, sodium chloride, various inorganic elements, and amino acids.
2. Pharmacological effects: Endoconcha Sepiae significantly promotes repair of experimental bone defects in animals; has anti-radiation effects; can inhibit tumor cell growth and prolong survival time of mice with ascitic sarcoma; its calcium salts can neutralize gastric acid, relieve burning sensation caused by acid regurgitation in the stomach, promote absorption of inflammation on ulcer surfaces, and accelerate ulcer healing.
3. Clinical reports: 1. Upper gastrointestinal bleeding: equal amounts of Endoconcha Sepiae and raw rhubarb are finely powdered and encapsulated, 4–6 capsules per dose (each capsule contains 0.5 g of crude drug), taken every 4–6 hours with cool boiled water. In 50 cases of upper gastrointestinal bleeding caused by gastric and duodenal ulcers, bleeding stopped in 49 cases, ineffective in 1 case, with an effective rate of 98%.
