[Overview] This herb is also known as Chuanduan, Xiao Xuduan, Jiegucao, and Chuanduobogen. It is the root of Dipsacus asperoides C.Y.Cheng et T.M.Ai, a plant of the Dipsacaceae family. It is mainly produced in Hubei, Sichuan, and Guizhou provinces, with additional production in Yunnan, Hunan, and Jiangxi.
Harvested in autumn, the roots are dug up, with the root heads and fine roots removed. They are then dried over low heat until half dry, piled to ‘sweat’ until the interior turns green, and finally sun-dried.
[Properties] Bitter and pungent in taste, warm in nature. Enters the Liver and Kidney meridians.
[Actions] Tonifies the Liver and Kidney, strengthens sinews and bones, heals fractures and injuries, stops uterine bleeding.
[Applications]
1. Used for soreness and weakness of the lumbar region and knees due to Liver and Kidney deficiency; often combined with Sangjisheng (Taxillus), Duzhong (Eucommia), Niuxi (Achyranthes). If accompanied by cold-damp painful obstruction, Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia) and Chuanwu (Aconite) may be added, as in the formula Xuduan Wan (续断丸).
2. Used for Kidney Yang deficiency manifesting as impotence, spermatorrhea, frequent urination. For impotence, often combined with Lurong (Deer Antler), Roucongrong (Cistanche), Tusizi (Cuscuta), as in Lurong Xuduan San (鹿茸续断散); for Kidney deficiency spermatorrhea and leakage, combined with Shanyao (Dioscorea), Qianshi (Euryale seed); for instability of the lower origin with frequent urination, combined with Yizhiren (Alpinia), Nuzhenzi (Ligustrum), Tusizi.
3. Used for restless fetus and threatened miscarriage due to Kidney deficiency, and uterine bleeding. For restless fetus, combined with Tusizi, Sangjisheng, Ejiao (Donkey-hide gelatin); for uterine bleeding, combined with Cebaitan (Biota charcoal), Aiye (Mugwort leaf), Danggui (Angelica sinensis).
4. Used for traumatic swelling and pain, fractures; powdered and taken with yellow wine; or combined with Ziran Tong (Natural copper), Danggui, Dibeichong (Eupolyphaga), Xuejie (Dragon’s blood).
Additionally, Xuduan can be used for carbuncles, ulcers, and scrofula, often combined with Pugongying (Dandelion).
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 9–15 g; or incorporated into pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount; fresh herb mashed and applied topically. For rheumatic painful obstruction and traumatic injuries, often prepared with wine; for soreness and weakness of the lumbar and knees, often prepared with salt.
[Cautions] Contraindicated in wind-heat painful obstruction.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: The root contains cycloartane glycosides such as angoroside, strychnoside, and evodioside; triterpenoid saponins including metaplex saponin D; volatile oil components exceeding 40 types, with higher contents of dill apiol, 4-methylphenol, 2,4-dimethylphenol, 3-methylphenol, ethyl caproate, 1,2-dimethoxybenzene, etc.; also contains carotenoid glycosides, common ivy saponin aglycones, β-sitosterol, sucrose, trace element titanium, among others.

Pharmacological effects: Xuduan extract and total alkaloids exhibit significant positive inotropic effects on the hearts of cold-blooded and warm-blooded animals both in vivo and in vitro; total flavonoids significantly reduce arterial pressure and smooth muscle tension; total saponins have arterial pressure-lowering effects.
