[Overview] This herb is also known as Yuzhouloulu or Blue Thistle. It is the root of Echinopsis latifolius Tausch, a plant of the Asteraceae family. It is mainly produced in Shandong, Henan, Inner Mongolia, and other regions. The roots are harvested in spring and autumn, with fine roots and impurities removed, then dried in the sun.
[Properties] Bitter in taste, cold in nature. Enters the stomach meridian.
[Actions] Clears heat and detoxifies, expels pus and stops bleeding, reduces swelling and promotes lactation.
[Applications]
1. Used for breast abscess, sores and carbuncles, scrofula; can be combined with dandelion, Trichosanthes kirilowii, burdock seed, and others.
2. Used for postpartum insufficient flow of qi and milk; can be combined with pangolin scales, Vaccaria seeds, etc.; if due to qi and blood deficiency causing insufficient lactation, can be combined with Astragalus membranaceus, Angelica sinensis, pig’s trotters, and others.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 4.5–9 g. External use: appropriate amount, powdered and mixed with vinegar; or fresh herb pounded and applied topically.
[Cautions] Contraindicated in yin-type ulcers and pregnancy.
[Modern Research] Pharmacological effects: Radix Echinopsis can restore liver function damage and hepatocyte necrosis induced by carbon tetrachloride, and has anti-atherosclerosis and antioxidant effects.
