[Overview] This herb is also known as San Naizi, Shan La, and Sha Jiang. It is the rhizome of Kaempferia galanga L., a plant of the Zingiberaceae family. It is produced in Taiwan, Guangdong, Guangxi, and Yunnan. It is harvested in winter, washed clean, with fibrous roots removed, sliced, and sun-dried.

[Properties] Pungent in taste, warm in nature. Enters the stomach meridian.

[Actions] Promotes qi circulation and warms the middle burner, aids digestion, relieves pain.

[Applications]
1. Used for epigastric and abdominal cold pain and food stagnation with indigestion. For epigastric and abdominal cold pain, it can be combined with dried ginger, cinnamon, amomum, and Corydalis yanhusuo; if accompanied by food accumulation and indigestion, it can be combined with hawthorn, costus, medicated leaven (shenqu), and areca nut.
2. Used for traumatic injuries and toothache. For traumatic injury pain, it can be used alone or combined with safflower, angelica, frankincense, and myrrh; for toothache, it can be combined with asarum or musk, ground into powder and applied topically to the affected area.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 6–9 g; or incorporated into pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount, pounded and applied as a poultice; or ground into powder and mixed for topical application.

[Cautions] Contraindicated in cases of yin deficiency with blood deficiency and stomach fire stagnation.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: The rhizome contains volatile oil, whose main components are borneol, ethyl cinnamate, camphene, and copaene. It also contains flavonoids such as kaempferol and kaempferide.
2. Pharmacological effects: This herb exhibits anticancer, antifungal, and larvicidal effects against canine hookworm larvae; ethyl cinnamate extracted from the rhizome inhibits monoamine oxidase.
3. Clinical reports: For lymph node tuberculosis, equal amounts of Rhizoma Kaempferiae and camphor are used. First, Rhizoma Kaempferiae is ground into fine powder, then mixed evenly with camphor powder. An appropriate amount of the powder is evenly sprinkled on the center of adhesive tape, tightly applied to the affected area, and changed every other day. In a total of 21 cases treated, 20 were cured and 1 was ineffective, with a cure rate of 95.2%. [Shizhen Guoyao Research, 1991, 2(3):132]
