[Overview] This herb is also known as Gao Liang Jiang, Liang Jiang, Xiao Liang Jiang, and Hai Liang Jiang. It is the rhizome of Alpinia officinarum Hance, a plant of the Zingiberaceae family. It is mainly produced in Guangdong, Hainan, Guangxi, with additional production in Taiwan and Yunnan. The rhizomes are harvested in late summer to early autumn by digging up the roots, removing the aerial stems and fibrous roots, washing clean, cutting into sections, and sun-drying.

[Properties] It has a pungent taste and a warm nature. It enters the spleen and stomach meridians.

[Actions] Warms the middle burner and disperses cold, regulates qi and relieves pain.

[Applications]
1. Used for cold pain in the epigastrium and abdomen. When cold congeals in the middle burner or cold evil directly attacks the spleen and stomach causing cold pain in the epigastrium and abdomen, it is often combined with dried ginger for mutual enhancement, as in the formula Er Jiang Wan (Two Gingers Pill). If cold congeals and qi stagnates causing distending pain in the epigastrium, abdomen, or chest and hypochondria, it can be combined with Xiang Fu (Cyperus) as in Liang Fu Wan (Galangal and Cyperus Pill). For middle burner deficiency with cold pain in the epigastrium and abdomen, it is often combined with Ren Shen (Ginseng) and Bai Zhu (Atractylodes) among others. For sudden stabbing heart and abdominal colic with fullness and discomfort in the hypochondria, it can be combined with Hou Po (Magnolia bark), Rou Gui Xin (Cinnamon heart), Dang Gui (Angelica sinensis), etc. For cold hernia abdominal pain, it is commonly combined with Xiao Hui Xiang (Fennel) as in Tian Tai Wu Yao San (Top-quality Lindera Powder).
2. Used for vomiting and belching due to stomach cold, often combined with Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) and Ban Xia (Pinellia). If caused by stomach qi deficiency cold, it is combined with Ren Shen, Bai Zhu, Fu Ling (Poria), etc.
3. Used for diarrhea and dysentery. If caused by cold dampness, it is often combined with Bi Ba (Piper longum), Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger), Rou Gui (Cinnamon), etc., as in Da Yi Han Wan (Great Yi Cold Pill). For chronic diarrhea and dysentery due to deficiency cold, it is often combined with Ren Shen, Bai Zhu, Bu Gu Zhi (Psoralea), etc.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 3–6 g, or incorporated into pills or powders.

[Cautions] Contraindicated in cases of yin deficiency with heat.

1. Chemical constituents: The rhizome contains various diarylheptanoids, flavonoids, and volatile oils. The main components of the oil are eucalyptol, eugenol, pinene, phellandrene, and methyl cinnamate.
