[Overview] This herb is also known as Lingzhi grass, wood Lingzhi, and fungal Lingzhi. It is the fruiting body of the polypore fungus Ganoderma lucidum (Leyss. ex Fr.) Karst. or Ganoderma sinense Zhao, Xuet Zhang. Lingzhi is mainly produced in East China, Southwest China, and the provinces of Jilin, Hebei, Shanxi, Jiangxi, Guangdong, Guangxi, etc. Ganoderma sinense is mainly produced in Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Fujian, Hunan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Sichuan, and other regions. It is harvested year-round. After removing impurities and trimming off the stipe attached to decayed wood, mud, or culture substrate, it is dried in the shade or dried at 40~50°C.
[Properties] Sweet in taste, neutral in nature. Enters the Heart, Liver, and Lung meridians.
[Actions] Tonifies Qi and calms the spirit; stops cough and relieves asthma.
[Applications]
1. Used for weak constitution, Qi and blood deficiency, fatigue, shortness of breath, and lack of strength; often combined with Ginseng, Astragalus, Angelica sinensis, Rehmannia glutinosa, etc.
2. Used for Heart and Spleen deficiency causing insufficient blood to nourish the Heart, resulting in restlessness, palpitations, insomnia, excessive dreaming, and forgetfulness; often combined with Angelica sinensis, White Peony root, Ziziphus seed, and Biota seed.
3. Used for Lung Qi deficiency with persistent cough and asthma; often combined with Ginseng, Schisandra, Dried Ginger, Pinellia, etc.
Currently, it is commonly used clinically for coronary heart disease, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, chronic gastritis, neurasthenia, and leukopenia caused by various reasons. It is also frequently used as an adjuvant treatment for cancer patients and is commonly prepared as tablets, capsules, syrups, and injections.
[Dosage and Administration] Oral administration: decoction 6~12 g; powdered form 1.5~3 g taken with water; or incorporated into pills or powders; or soaked in alcohol or made into paste.
[Cautions] Not suitable for use at the onset of a common cold.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical Constituents: Ganoderma lucidum contains various amino acids, peptides, triterpenoids, as well as mannitol, stearic acid, trehalose, ergosterol, acid protease, coumarin, and water-soluble proteins. Ganoderma sinense contains betaine, γ-trimethylaminobutyric acid and its ethyl ester, ergosterol, trehalose, organic acids, glucosamine, polysaccharides, resins, and mannitol.
2. Pharmacological Effects: Ganoderma can reduce central nervous system excitability producing a sedative effect; significantly prolongs the latency of pain response in rat tails under radiation heat stimulation, showing obvious analgesic effects; the alcohol extract of Ganoderma lucidum has hepatoprotective effects, reducing elevated alanine aminotransferase caused by carbon tetrachloride; exhibits cardiotonic, antihypertensive, enhanced oxygen tolerance, myocardial ischemia protection, lipid-lowering, and anti-atherosclerosis effects; protects against experimental gastric ulcers; has good expectorant, antitussive, and antiasthmatic effects; enhances immune function; possesses antioxidant and anti-aging properties; Ganoderma polysaccharides have antitumor effects, inhibiting S180 transplanted tumors in mice.
3. Clinical Reports:
1) Hepatitis: Oral administration of Ganoderma tablets (each tablet equivalent to 1 g raw herb), 3 tablets per dose, 3 times daily. Treated 30 cases of HBsAg-positive chronic active hepatitis, with 18 cases markedly effective, 9 cases effective, 3 cases ineffective; total effective rate 90%. [New Medicine, 1985, 16(12):632]
2) Pediatric Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura: Oral Ganoderma liquid (each ml contains 0.175 g raw herb), 10~15 ml per dose, 3 times daily. Treated 30 cases, with 19 markedly effective, 3 effective, 1 improved, 4 ineffective, 3 lost to follow-up. [Chinese Journal of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine, 1985, (7):431]
3) Atrophic Myotonia: Intramuscular injection of Ganoderma lucidum spore powder injection, 400 mg per dose. Treated 10 cases, with 5 markedly effective, 2 improved, 3 ameliorated. [Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1981, (6):22]
4) Impotence: Ganoderma 6 g sliced, simmered over low heat into a concentrated decoction, taken on an empty stomach in the morning or 1 hour before lunch. Treated 36 cases, total effective rate 93.94%. [Fujian Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1995, (1):15]
