[Overview] This product is also known as edible honey, white honey, white sand honey, and sugar honey. It is the honey produced by bees of the family Apidae, specifically the Chinese honeybee Apis cerana Fabricius or the Italian bee Apis mellifera Linnaeus. It is produced in most regions nationwide. Harvested in spring, summer, and autumn by cutting the honeycomb, placing it in a cloth bag, and squeezing out the honey.

[Properties] Sweet in taste, neutral in nature. Enters the Spleen, Lung, and Large Intestine meridians.

[Actions] Tonifies the middle burner, moistens dryness, relieves pain, detoxifies.

[Applications]
1. Used for spleen and stomach deficiency with epigastric and abdominal pain; honey can be diluted with water and taken orally or combined with Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix), Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) and others. Commonly used for gastritis, gastric neurosis causing epigastric cramping pain, and latent pain from gastric and duodenal ulcers.
2. Used for chronic cough due to lung deficiency, dry cough from lung dryness, and throat pain from fluid injury. For chronic consumptive cough, dry throat with hemoptysis, chest tightness, shortness of breath, emaciation, and fatigue, it can be decocted with Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Fu Ling (Poria), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix) into a syrup for long-term use; for dry cough without phlegm, chest tightness and hypochondriac pain, dry throat, it can be taken alone diluted or with apricot kernel decoction mixed with honey; for late-stage febrile diseases with residual heat disturbing the throat and dry painful throat, it can be combined with Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix) and pig fat to make a syrup for sucking to moisten the throat.
3. Used for intestinal dryness constipation; can be taken alone diluted or made into suppositories for rectal administration.
4. Used externally for early-stage abscesses, mouth ulcers, chronic ulcers, and burns caused by heat toxins. Additionally, honey decocted with Aconitum species can reduce their toxicity.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: dissolve in boiling water, 15–30 g. Or incorporated into pills or syrups. External use: apply an appropriate amount to the affected area.

[Cautions] Contraindicated in cases of phlegm-dampness accumulation, fullness and distension in the middle burner, and incomplete bowel movements.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents mainly include glucose, fructose, sucrose and other sugars. Also contains volatile oils, waxes, organic acids, pollen grains, and small amounts of niacin, enzymes, vitamins, and carotene.
2. Pharmacological effects: Honey can enhance humoral immune function, reduce blood sugar and blood pressure, nourish the myocardium, improve myocardial metabolism, regulate and normalize cardiac function; regulate nervous system function, improve patient sleep, and enhance mental and physical activity; has a laxative effect on the gastrointestinal tract, significantly shortens defecation time, and regulates gastric acid secretion; has certain antitumor and significant antitumor metastasis effects, can enhance the antitumor effects of cyclophosphamide and 5-fluorouracil, and reduce the toxic side effects of chemotherapy drugs; also has antibacterial and detoxifying effects.
3. Clinical reports:
1) Traumatic ulcers: Honey applied on sterile gauze, after routine wound disinfection, bandage the wound once daily until healed. For large, long-lasting ulcers with abundant pus, change dressing twice daily. Total 105 cases treated, all cured. [Xin Zhong Yi, 1994,(3):26]
2) Burns: Honey applied externally to affected areas combined with intravenous antibiotics. Total 592 cases treated, results: marked effective rate 85.8%, effective rate 10.5%. [Zhong Yi Za Zhi, 1993,(8):489]
3) Acute and chronic cholecystitis, cholelithiasis: Honey and vinegar 150 ml each, Schisandra 10 g. Honey and vinegar decocted separately, Schisandra roasted and powdered as one dose, taken 1–2 times daily. All showed significant efficacy. [Guangming Zhong Yi Za Zhi, 1994,1:23]
4) Peptic ulcers in the elderly: Take 10 g honey and 0.11 g potassium bismuth citrate half an hour before meals, four times daily. Total 120 cases treated, 102 cured (85%), 12 markedly effective (10%), 6 effective (5%). [Renmin Junyi, 2000,43(6):343]
5) Pediatric dry rhinitis: Use pure honey diluted with twice the amount of saline or purified water to make 10% honey water for nasal drops, 3–4 times daily, 2–3 drops each time. Total 78 cases treated, 19 cured, 52 improved, 7 ineffective, total effective rate 91.0%. [Zhongguo Zhong Xi Yi Jie He Er Bi Yan Hou Ke Za Zhi, 2002,10(2):57]
6) Oral ulcers: Rinse with saline first, remove irritants for traumatic ulcers, apply a small amount of Asarum-honey paste evenly on ulcer surface, three times daily, reexamine after 3 days. Total 32 cases treated, 31 had significant pain relief on the same day; 7 traumatic ulcer cases healed with disappearance of pain and swelling; 24 recurrent cases had ulcer reduction or disappearance; those not healed continued treatment for 2 more days and then healed, with reduced recurrence and longer intervals.
