[Overview] This herb is also known as Jade Butterfly, Thousand-Layer Paper, and White Jade Paper. It is the mature seed of Oroxylum indicum (L.) Vent., a plant of the Bignoniaceae family. It is mainly produced in Yunnan, Guangxi, Guangdong, Fujian, Guizhou, Sichuan, and other regions. The mature fruit is harvested in autumn and winter, sun-dried until the fruit cracks open, then the seeds are extracted and dried.

[Properties] Bitter and sweet in taste, cool in nature. Enters the Lung, Liver, and Stomach meridians.

[Applications]
1. Used for sore throat and hoarseness. For pathogenic heat injuring Yin with sore throat and hoarseness, it can be combined with Scrophulariae Radix (Xuanshen), Ophiopogonis Radix (Maidong), and Borneol (Bingpian). For persistent hoarseness, it can be combined with Sterculiae Lychnophorae Semen (Pangdahai), Cicadae Periostracum (Chanyi), and Paeoniae Radix Rubra (Chishao) decocted for oral administration. For hoarseness due to Spleen deficiency with dampness, it can be combined with Coicis Semen (Yiyiren), Amomi Fructus (Baikouren), and Armeniacae Semen (Xingren).
2. Used for Lung-heat cough and whooping cough, combined with Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng), Morus Alba Cortex (Sangbaipi), and Farfarae Flos (Kuantonghua).

1. Chemical constituents: The seeds contain fatty oil glycosides, mainly oleic acid. Also contains baicalin dimers, oroxylin A glycosides, oroxylin B glycosides, populin, baicalein 7-O-β-D-glucuronide, gentiobiose glycosides, fatty acids, benzoic acid, alkaloids, sterols, tannins, etc.
2. Pharmacological effects: Semen Oroxyli has preventive and therapeutic effects on cataracts; it can inhibit and correct metabolic disorders during cataract formation. It also shows genotoxic and cell proliferation activities on isolated gastric mucosa.
3. Clinical reports: 1) Cough: Semen Oroxyli, 5–10 g daily for children; 12–20 g for adults, decocted in water. A total of 85 cases treated, with 52 markedly effective and 29 effective. [Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1991, 32(8):46] 2) Hysterical globus (plum-pit qi): Semen Oroxyli 3 g, Platycodonis Radix 2 g, raw Glycyrrhizae Radix 1 g, steeped in boiling water, one dose daily divided into 3 doses (morning, noon, evening), can be increased to 4–6 doses. A total of 100 cases treated; after 5 doses, symptoms disappeared in 55 cases; after 10 doses, 28 cases; after 15 doses, 17 cases. Among them, 30 cases relapsed and were treated again with continued effectiveness.
