[Overview] This herb is also known as False Bitter Melon, Guangguo Mubie, and Luo Han Guo. It is the fruit of the Momordica grosvenorii Swingle plant from the Cucurbitaceae family. It is mainly produced in Yongfu and Lingui, Guangxi. The fruit is harvested in autumn when it changes from light green to dark green, then dried for several days and further dried at low temperature.
[Properties] Sweet in taste, cool in nature. Enters the Lung and Spleen meridians.
[Actions] Clears Lung heat and benefits the throat; moistens the intestines and unblocks the bowels.
[Applications]
1. Used for cough due to Lung heat or Lung dryness with difficult expectoration, dry throat and tongue. Can be decocted alone or combined with Huang Qin (Scutellaria baicalensis), Zhe Bei Mu (Fritillaria thunbergii), and Gua Lou (Trichosanthes fruit). Also used for whooping cough, combined with dried persimmon.
2. Used for sore throat, loss of voice, thirst, and dry tongue. Decoction can be sipped frequently; can also be infused in water as a tea substitute.
3. Used for dry intestines causing constipation and scrofula with phlegm nodules. For mild constipation, it can be infused in water as a tea substitute; for severe cases, combined with Huo Ma Ren (Cannabis seed) and Yu Li Ren (Prunus seed) in decoction. For scrofula, combined with Zhe Bei Mu, Xia Ku Cao (Prunella), and Shan Ci Gu (Cremastra) among others.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction 15–30 g; or stewed with meat; or soaked in boiling water.

Chemical constituents: The fruit contains non-sugar sweet components, mainly triterpene glycosides; also contains large amounts of glucose and fructose, as well as manganese, iron, nickel, zinc, molybdenum, selenium, and tin. The seed kernel contains oils, including fatty acids such as linoleic acid, oleic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid, palmitoleic acid, myristic acid, lauric acid, and capric acid.
2. Pharmacological effects: Luo Han Guo extract can significantly increase the percentage of peripheral blood acid α-naphthyl acetate esterase-positive lymphocytes, suggesting enhancement of the body’s cellular immune function.
