[Overview] This herb is also known as Sangshenzi, Sangshi, Heishen, and Sangguo. It is the fruit spike of Morus alba L., a plant of the Moraceae family. It is produced in most regions of China, mainly in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Hunan, Hebei, and Sichuan provinces. Harvest occurs from April to June when the fruit spikes turn red, followed by sun drying or steaming then sun drying.
[Properties] Taste: sweet and sour; nature: cold. Enters the Liver and Kidney meridians.
[Actions] Nourishes yin and blood, generates fluids, and moistens the intestines.
[Applications] 1. Used for signs of Liver and Kidney yin deficiency, such as dizziness, tinnitus, blurred vision, premature graying of hair, palpitations, and insomnia. It can be used alone as a syrup (e.g., Sangshen syrup) or combined with He Shou Wu (Polygonum multiflorum), Nu Zhen Zi (Ligustrum lucidum), Han Lian Cao (Eclipta prostrata), etc., as in the formula Shouwu Yanshou Dan.
2. Used for fluid injury with thirst and diabetes; often combined with Mai Dong (Ophiopogon japonicus), Shi Hu (Dendrobium), etc. If heat is severe, combined with Xu Tian Hua Fen (Trichosanthes root powder), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhena asphodeloides), etc. If qi deficiency is also present, combined with Xi Yang Shen (Panax quinquefolius), Tai Zi Shen (Pseudostellaria heterophylla), etc.
3. Used for fluid and blood deficiency causing dry intestines and constipation; often combined with He Shou Wu, Rou Cong Rong (Cistanche deserticola), Hei Zhi Ma (black sesame), Huo Ma Ren (Cannabis seed), etc.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 10–15 g. Or brewed into wine; or made into syrup.
[Cautions] Because it nourishes yin, generates fluids, and moistens the intestines, it is contraindicated in cases of spleen and stomach deficiency cold with loose stools.
[Modern Research] 1. Chemical constituents: Mulberry fruit contains sugars, tannins, malic acid, and vitamins B1, B2, C, and carotene. The fatty acids in its lipids are mainly linoleic acid, oleic acid, palmitic acid, and stearic acid.

Pharmacological effects: Mulberry fruit decoction significantly increases T lymphocytes in mice of different ages. 3H-TdR incorporation lymphocyte transformation tests show that the decoction moderately stimulates lymphocyte transformation. The decoction also significantly reduces Na+, K+, and ATPase activity in red blood cell membranes, which may be one mechanism of its yin-nourishing effect.
