[Overview] This herb is also known as Gansongxiang or Xiangsong. It is the root and rhizome of plants from the Valerianaceae family: Nardostachys chinensis Batal. or Nardostachys jatamansi Dc. It is mainly produced in Sichuan, Gansu, Qinghai, and other regions. Harvested in spring and autumn, after digging, the mud, sand, and impurities are removed, as well as residual stems and fine roots, then dried in the sun or shade.

[Properties] Taste: pungent and sweet; nature: warm. Enters the spleen and stomach meridians.

[Actions] Regulates qi and relieves pain; awakens the spleen and strengthens the stomach.

[Applications]
1. Used for qi stagnation in the spleen and stomach, epigastric and abdominal pain, and poor appetite. This herb treats epigastric and abdominal pain, especially suitable for cold-induced qi stagnation. It is often combined with Shan Nai (Amomum villosum), and can also be used with Chen Xiang (Aquilaria), Xiang Fu (Cyperus), Mu Xiang (Aucklandia), Chen Pi (Citrus peel), Sha Ren (Amomum), etc. For qi stagnation causing chest tightness, epigastric distension, and poor appetite, it can be combined with Chai Hu (Bupleurum), Yu Jin (Curcuma), Bai Dou Kou (Amomum), etc. For cholera with cramps, abdominal pain, and vomiting, it can be combined with Gan Jiang (dried ginger), Fu Zi (Aconite), Wu Zhu Yu (Evodia), etc.
2. Used for toothache and halitosis. For toothache, it can be used alone by soaking in water for gargling; combined with Bai Zhi (Angelica dahurica), Xi Xin (Asarum), Shi Gao (Gypsum), and calcined salt, ground into fine powder and applied to teeth morning and evening, it can help strengthen teeth and eliminate oral odor.

1. Chemical constituents: Nardostachyos contains aristolochic acid, nardosinone, debilone, valeranone, patchouli alcohol; broad-leaf Nardostachyos contains furanocoumarin compounds such as nardosinone, nardostachysol, angelicotoxin, lanxangol, β-eucalyptol, nardosinone, valeranone, etc.
