[Overview] This herb is the seed kernel of the Rosaceae family plants Peach (Prunus persica (L.)) or Wild Peach (Prunus davidiana (Carr.) Franch.). Peach is widely produced across most regions of China, mainly in Sichuan, Yunnan, Shaanxi, Shandong, Beijing, Hebei, Shanxi, and Henan, mostly cultivated with large yields; Wild Peach is mainly found in Hebei, Henan, Shandong, Shanxi, Shaanxi, and Sichuan, mostly wild with smaller yields. The mature fruits are harvested in summer and autumn, the fruit stones are taken out, cleaned of flesh and shell, the stones are cracked to extract the seeds, which are then sun-dried.
[Properties] Bitter and sweet in taste, neutral in nature. Slightly toxic. Enters the Heart, Liver, and Large Intestine meridians.
[Actions] Invigorates blood and dispels blood stasis; moistens intestines and unblocks bowels.
[Applications] 1. Used for blood stasis causing amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, and postpartum abdominal pain due to stasis. For dysmenorrhea and amenorrhea, often combined with Safflower, Angelica, Rehmannia, etc., as in Taohong Siwu Tang. For postpartum lochia retention with lower abdominal cold pain, often combined with Angelica, Chuanxiong, processed ginger, and honey-fried licorice, as in Shenghua Tang.
2. Used for blood accumulation syndromes. For heat-induced bladder blood accumulation in typhoid, symptoms include lower abdominal urgency and hardness, black stools, normal urination, severe cases with delirium and thirst, resembling madness; combined with Rhubarb, Mirabilite, Cinnamon Twig, etc. For severe blood accumulation with lower abdominal hardness, madness, or jaundice, combined with leech and horsefly, as in Taohua Chengqi Tang and Didang Tang.
3. Used for abdominal masses and accumulations. For qi stagnation and blood stasis obstructing below the diaphragm forming fixed painful masses, combined with Trogopterus feces, Angelica, Moutan bark, and Aurantii Fructus, as in Gexia Zhuyu Tang. For women with persistent lower abdominal masses, continuous vaginal bleeding after pregnancy, and restless fetus, combined with Moutan bark, Red peony root, Cinnamon twig, and Poria, as in Guizhi Fuling Wan.
4. Used for qi stagnation and blood stasis causing channel obstruction and joint pain, combined with Safflower, Frankincense, Myrrh, Earthworm, Angelica, etc., as in Chentong San; or with Angelica, Safflower, Clematis, Musk, as in Taohong Yin.
5. Used for traumatic injuries with blood stasis under the ribs causing severe pain, often combined with Safflower, Angelica, Bupleurum, Rhubarb, and Pangolin scales, as in Fuyuan Huoxue Tang.
6. Used for lung and intestinal abscesses. For lung abscess with chest pain and foul-smelling sputum with pus and blood, combined with Reed rhizome, Coix seed, Winter melon seed, as in Weijing Tang; for intestinal abscess with right lower abdominal pain and tenderness, combined with Rhubarb, Mirabilite, and Moutan bark, as in Dahuang Mudan Pi Tang.
7. Used for dry constipation, often combined with Cannabis seed, Apricot kernel, Biota seed, and Tangerine peel, as in Wuren Wan.
[Dosage and Administration] Taken internally, decocted in water, 4.5–9 g, crushed before decoction.
[Cautions] Use with caution in pregnant women and those with blood deficiency. This herb has slight toxicity and should not be overdosed.
[Modern Research] 1. Chemical Constituents: Peach kernel contains amygdalin, amygdalase, volatile oils, and fixed oils, mainly glycerides of oleic acid and small amounts of linoleic acid glycerides.
2. Pharmacological Effects: Extracts significantly increase cerebral and femoral artery blood flow and reduce vascular resistance; improve local microcirculation on animal liver surfaces and promote bile secretion; significantly prolong bleeding time in mice, increase platelet cAMP levels, inhibit ADP-induced platelet aggregation, and prevent thrombosis; exhibit notable anti-hepatic fibrosis effects; fixed oils lubricate intestines aiding defecation; amygdalin promotes expectoration; both peach kernel and amygdalin have anti-inflammatory effects and reduce exudation in early inflammation; decoctions and extracts show antibacterial, analgesic, anti-allergic, antioxidant, and anti-tumor activities.
3. Clinical Reports: (i) Schistosomiasis-induced liver cirrhosis: Amygdalin injection 500 mg added to 5% glucose 500 ml, intravenous drip every other day, total dose 22.5 g, treating 20 cases with significant symptom and lab improvements, liver shrinkage in 11 cases, efficacy superior to glucose control group. [Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1986,(6):24] (ii) Vulvar pruritus: 20 g peach kernel pounded into paste, mixed with appropriate realgar powder, applied on sliced chicken liver inserted vaginally, changed daily, 7 cases all cured. [New Chinese Medicine, 1987,9(10):32] (iii) Coronary heart disease: 12 g each of Gardenia and peach kernel ground into powder, mixed with 30 g refined honey or egg white into paste, applied on precordial area, 50 cases treated with 22 markedly effective, 22 improved; ECG markedly effective in 7, improved in 18. [Intermediate Medical Journal, 1981,(4):19] (iv) Trauma or soft tissue injury: within half a day of injury, peach kernel mashed into paste, rhubarb powdered, mixed with cactus paste into ointment applied to swollen painful area; after half a day, peach kernel and rhubarb powder mixed with yellow wine applied. 42 cases treated, 40 cured, 2 improved, 100% effective rate.
