[Overview] This herb is also known as Hongcao Seed, Shuihongzi, Shuihongcaozi, and Helouzi. It is the mature fruit of Polygonum orientale L. of the Polygonaceae family. It is produced in Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning, Inner Mongolia, Hebei, Shanxi, Gansu, Shandong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, and other regions. The fruit spikes are harvested in autumn when the fruits mature, sun-dried, threshed to remove the fruits, and impurities are removed.

[Properties] Salty in taste, slightly cold in nature. Enters the Liver and Stomach meridians.

[Actions] Promotes qi circulation and activates blood, softens hardness and dissipates nodules.

[Applications]
1. Used for epigastric and hypochondriac distension and pain, abdominal masses and lumps. The herb is decocted alone into a paste for oral administration and applied topically according to the size and location of the lesion. Currently, it is often used to treat hepatosplenomegaly and ascites due to liver cirrhosis, frequently combined with Da Fu Shi Pi and Heichou. For epigastric distension and pain, it is decocted alone or taken as a powder.
2. Used for scrofula, phlegm nodules, and goiter. For scrofula, equal parts of raw and cooked herb are powdered and taken with wine after meals; for cervical goiter, it is combined with Prunella vulgaris (Xiakucao), Sargassum (Haizao), and Laminaria (Kombu). Additionally, it clears heat and brightens the eyes, used for red, swollen, and painful eyes. It also stops cough.

[Dosage and Administration] For internal use, decoct 15–30 g; can be prepared as a paste, soaked in wine, or taken as powder. For external use to relieve asthma, apply an appropriate amount as a paste or crushed poultice.
