[Overview] This herb is also known as Ye Jiaoteng and Qi Teng. It is the stem vine of Polygonum multiflorum Thunb., a plant of the Polygonaceae family. It is mainly produced in Zhejiang, Hubei, Jiangsu, and Henan provinces, with Zhejiang and Hubei having larger yields. Harvested in summer and autumn, the residual leaves are removed, then it is bundled and dried in the sun or by baking.

[Properties] Sweet in taste, neutral in nature. Enters the Heart and Liver meridians.

[Actions] Nourishes the blood and calms the spirit; dispels wind and unblocks the channels.

[Applications]
1. Used for yin deficiency with blood deficiency causing virtual vexation and insomnia, excessive dreaming and easy fright. Often combined with Biota seed (Bai Zi Ren), Sour jujube seed (Suan Zao Ren), and Mother-of-pearl (Zhen Zhu Mu). If yin and blood deficiency are more pronounced, it should be combined with Angelica sinensis (Dang Gui), White peony root (Bai Shao), Rehmannia glutinosa prepared root (Shu Di), and Albizia bark (He Huan Pi).
2. Used for blood deficiency causing malnourishment of tendons and vessels resulting in limb pain or numbness. Commonly combined with Angelica sinensis (Dang Gui), Lianqiao vine (Luo Shi Teng), Chicken blood vine (Ji Xue Teng), and Acanthopanax bark (Wu Jia Pi) to dispel wind and harmonize the channels. For wind-damp painful obstruction with difficulty bending and stretching joints and heat signs, it can be combined with Lonicera vine (Ren Dong Teng), Lianqiao vine (Luo Shi Teng), and Mulberry twig (Sang Zhi). For predominantly cold signs, it can be combined with Cinnamon twig (Gui Zhi), Haifeng vine (Hai Feng Teng), and Clematis root (Wei Ling Xian).
3. Used for wind rash itching; can be used alone or combined with Saposhnikovia root (Fang Feng), Sophora root (Ku Shen), and Kochia fruit (Di Fu Zi).

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoct 9–15 g. External use: appropriate amount, decocted for washing; or crushed and applied topically.

1. Chemical constituents: Caulis Polygoni Multiflori contains anthraquinones, mainly emodin, physcion, physcion methyl ether, emodin anthraquinone, emodin-8-glucoside, and also contains β-sitosterol.
2. Pharmacological effects: Decoction of Caulis Polygoni Multiflori has sedative and hypnotic effects in experimental mice; the alcohol extract of Ye Jiaoteng shows lipid-lowering, anti-atherosclerosis, and preventive effects against fatty liver in experimental hyperlipidemic rats.
