[Overview] This herb is also known as Yumiqiao, Suqiao, Miqiao, and Yandoudou. It is the dried mature pericarp of the Papaveraceae plant Papaver somniferum L. Originally native to foreign countries, it is now cultivated in small quantities in some regions of China by government-designated units for medicinal use. In autumn, the mature fruits are harvested after the latex has been extracted, then split open to remove seeds and peduncles, and sun-dried.

[Properties] It tastes sour and astringent, has a neutral nature, and is toxic. It enters the Lung, Large Intestine, and Kidney meridians.

[Actions] Astringes the Lung to stop cough, astringes the intestines to stop diarrhea, and relieves pain.

[Applications]
1. Used for chronic cough due to Lung deficiency and persistent wheezing; often combined with Wumei (Fructus Mume), as in Xiaobailao San.
If Lung qi deficiency is severe, Ginseng and Schisandra may be added.
2. Used for chronic diarrhea, chronic dysentery, and prolapse of the rectum. For spleen deficiency with chronic diarrhea, often combined with Hezi (Fructus Terminaliae), Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), Sharen (Fructus Amomi), or Wumei and Dazao (Fructus Jujubae), etc. If diarrhea and dysentery are prolonged with signs of deficiency cold, often combined with Rou Dou Kou (Semen Myristicae), as in Zhenren Yangzang Tang. For spleen and kidney deficiency with early morning diarrhea that is prolonged and unremitting, often combined with Cangzhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis), Ginseng, Wumei, Rou Dou Kou, etc., as in Gutang Wan. If chronic diarrhea is followed by rectal prolapse, may be combined with Huangqi (Radix Astragali), Dangshen (Radix Codonopsis), Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae), etc.
3. Used for epigastric and abdominal pain, and musculoskeletal pain; can be used alone or in compound formulas.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decocted, 3–6 g; or used in pills or powders. For cough, it is best prepared with honey-frying; for diarrhea and dysentery, vinegar-frying is preferred.

[Cautions] This herb is addictive and should not be used long-term. Use cautiously in early-stage cough or diarrhea, or when chronic diarrhea is accompanied by food stagnation. It is toxic and should not be overdosed. Infants are especially susceptible to poisoning.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: The fruit contains morphine, narcotine, noscapine, papaverine, codeine, oripavine, bergenin glycosides, D-mannopyranosyl bergenin, D-glyceropyranosyl D-mannosyl xanthone, myo-inositol, erythritol, isopurpurin alkaloids, polyfloral papaverine alkaloids, papaver pericarp alkaloids, semi-phenolic alkaloids, etc.
2. Pharmacological effects: Morphine contained in the pericarp has significant analgesic and hypnotic effects; morphine strongly inhibits the respiratory center, thus providing good antitussive effects; morphine increases gastrointestinal and sphincter tone, reduces digestive secretions, and dulls the defecation reflex, greatly delaying gastrointestinal motility, thereby producing an antidiarrheal effect. Frequent morphine use often causes constipation.
