[Overview] This herb is also known as Liuqiuzi, Shijunzi, Wulengzi, and Junziren. It is the mature fruit or seed of Quisqualis indica L., a plant of the family Combretaceae. It is mainly produced in Sichuan, Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Taiwan, and other regions. Harvest in autumn when the fruit shell changes from green to purple-black, remove impurities, then sun-dry or bake-dry.
[Properties] Sweet in taste, warm in nature. Enters the spleen and stomach meridians.
[Actions] Kills parasites, reduces food accumulation, strengthens the spleen.
[Applications]
1. Used for ascariasis and enterobiasis. This herb is a principal medicine for expelling roundworms, especially suitable for pediatric patients. For mild cases, it can be stir-fried and chewed alone or ground into powder for administration; for severe cases, it is combined with Melia bark (Kuliánpí), Areca (Binglang), etc., as in the formula Shijunzi San (使君子散). For roundworm-induced abdominal pain with cyanosis of lips and mouth, it can be combined with rhubarb (Dahuang), Sichuan pepper (Huajiao), and Semen Lepidii (Leiwán), as in Huachong San (化虫散). For pinworm infection, it is often stir-fried and chewed, or powdered and taken, or combined with Areca and Stemona (Baibu) to expel worms.
2. Used for pediatric malnutrition and food retention, symptoms include sallow complexion, emaciation, abdominal distension; it can be combined with Aucklandia (Muxiang), Malt (Maiya), Coptis (Huanglian), etc., as in Feier Wan (肥儿丸). If accompanied by spleen deficiency with diarrhea, add Codonopsis (Dangshen), Atractylodes (Baizhu), and Chicken Gizzard Membrane (Jineijin).
Additionally, the charred powder of this herb applied externally can treat chronic scalp sores; decoction used as a mouthwash can relieve toothache caused by parasites.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction 9–15 g, crushed and decocted; seeds (Shijunziren) 6–9 g, often used in pills or powders or alone, divided into 1–2 doses. The shell can be stir-fried and chewed; for children, 1 to 1.5 seeds per year of age, total not exceeding 20 seeds.
[Cautions] Dosage should not be excessive. Avoid drinking strong tea during medication, as it may cause hiccups, vomiting, dizziness, and other adverse reactions.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: Seeds contain quisqualic acid, potassium quisqualate, D-mannitol, fatty oils; also contain sterols, mainly phytosterols. The fruit pulp contains trigonelline, citric acid, succinic acid, malic acid, sucrose, glucose, etc.
2. Pharmacological effects: Extracts of Shijunziren have a strong paralytic effect on the heads of pig roundworms; the active component is potassium quisqualate. In vitro, it shows significant inhibitory effects on whole pig roundworms. The aqueous extract of Quisqualis indica inhibits various dermatophytes including Trichophyton violaceum, Trichophyton concentricum, Microsporum ferrugineum, Microsporum audouinii, Microsporum lanosum, Epidermophyton inguinale, and Nocardia asteroides to varying degrees.
3. Clinical reports: (1) Ascariasis: Using 15 g of Shijunzi, stir-fried until yellow and finely powdered, made into a powder and taken on an empty stomach. A total of 27 cases treated with an overall effective rate of 92.6%. [Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1988, (11):47] (2) Pediatric rectal prolapse: Using shelled Shijunzi seeds, mashed and mixed with appropriate maltose to make pills, each pill 3 g, one pill per dose, taken with stewed lean pork (60–150 g) every 3 days. A total of 53 cases treated with an effective rate of 84.9%. [Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1985, (2):34]
