[Overview] This herb is also known as Sheng Di, Sheng Di Huang, Fresh Di Huang, and Fresh Sheng Di. It is the fresh or dried tuberous root of Rehmannia glutinosa Libosch., a plant of the Scrophulariaceae family. It is produced in most regions of China, with large output and good quality from Nanzhao County, Bo’ai, Wuzhi, and Meng County in Henan Province. It is harvested in autumn, with the removal of the stem base, fibrous roots, and soil. It is used fresh or slowly baked until about 80% dry. The former is commonly called “Fresh Di Huang,” and the latter “Sheng Di Huang.”
[Properties] Taste: sweet and bitter; nature: cold. Enters the Heart, Liver, and Kidney meridians.
[Actions] Clears heat and cools the blood; nourishes yin and generates fluids.
[Applications]
1. Used for warm diseases where heat enters the nutritive (ying) level, presenting with high fever and delirium, faint rashes, no thirst, and a crimson tongue. It can be combined with Jin Yin Hua (Lonicera), Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex), Chi Shao (Red Peony Root), etc., in formulas such as Qing Ying Tang and Xi Jiao Di Huang Tang. For intense heat with vexation and thirst or late-stage warm diseases with yin injury and vexing thirst, fresh Sheng Di can be pounded into juice for drinking or combined with Mai Dong juice and honey.
2. Used for bleeding disorders caused by reckless movement of blood heat. For exuberant heat in the heart and lungs causing vomiting blood or nosebleeds, it is often combined with fresh He Ye (Lotus Leaf), fresh Ce Bai Ye (Biota Leaf), and fresh Ai Ye (Mugwort Leaf) in formulas such as Si Sheng Wan. For blood heat in the lower burner causing blood in urine or strangury, it can be combined with Bai Mao Gen, Da Ji, and Xiao Ji. For uterine bleeding and menorrhagia, it can be combined with Yi Mu Cao (Motherwort) and decocted together.
3. Used for yin deficiency with internal heat and bone steaming tidal fever. It can be combined with Zhi Mu and Di Gu Pi in formulas such as Di Huang Gao. For late-stage warm diseases where residual heat remains and yin fluids are injured with pathogenic factors lurking in the yin portion, symptoms include night fever and morning coolness, red tongue, and rapid pulse. It can be combined with Qing Hao, Bie Jia, and Zhi Mu in formulas such as Qing Hao Bie Jia Tang.
4. Used for thirst due to fluid injury from warm diseases or yin deficiency internal heat causing wasting-thirst disorder. For fluid injury thirst, it can be combined with Mai Dong, Sha Shen, and Yu Zhu in formulas such as Yi Wei Tang. For internal heat wasting-thirst, it is often combined with Shan Yao, Shan Zhu Yu, Gou Qi Zi, and Tai Zi Shen. Fresh Sheng Di juice can also be taken with lotus root juice and reed root juice.
5. Used for intestinal dryness constipation. It can be combined with Xuan Shen and Mai Dong in formulas such as Zeng Ye Tang.
Additionally, Sheng Di Huang can be used for mouth and tongue ulcers, diphtheria, sore throat, and red swollen eyes.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 9–12 g; fresh herb 12–30 g; pounded juice or concentrated paste. External use: appropriate amount, pounded and applied or juice applied topically.
[Cautions] Use with caution in cases of weak stomach with poor appetite or spleen deficiency with dampness.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical Constituents: The chemical constituents of Di Huang are mainly glycosides, especially iridoid glycosides. From fresh Sheng Di Huang, over ten iridoid glycosides have been isolated, including catalpol, rehmannioside A, B, C, D, and others, with catalpol content being the highest. It also contains sugars such as D-glucose, D-galactose, sucrose, and raffinose, with raffinose content being the highest. Additionally, it contains more than twenty amino acids, glucosamine, D-mannitol, phosphate, β-sitosterol, carotenoid glycosides, and inorganic elements.
2. Pharmacological Effects: The aqueous decoction of Sheng Di Huang significantly inhibits the formation of rosette cells in mouse spleen and markedly promotes DNA and protein biosynthesis in spleen lymphocytes activated by concanavalin A. It also promotes lymphocyte transformation in humans. Sheng Di Huang can correct the increased number of β-receptors in the kidneys of hyperthyroid rats, restoring thyroid function to normal. It also accelerates the proliferation and differentiation of multipotent hematopoietic stem cells and granulocytic progenitor cells in mouse bone marrow.
