[Overview] This herb is also known as Guanyin Tea, Jiujiefeng, Jiujie Tea, and Jiegumu. It is the whole plant of Sarcandra glabra (Thunb.) Nakai, belonging to the Chloranthaceae family. It is mainly produced in Jiangxi, Zhejiang, Guangxi, and other regions, with large quantities and good quality from Guixi, Yujiang, Ganzhou in Jiangxi, and Yongjia, Pingyang, Taishun in Zhejiang. It is harvested in summer and autumn, impurities are removed, and it is used fresh or dried.
[Properties] Pungent and bitter in taste, neutral in nature. Enters the liver and large intestine meridians.
[Actions] Clears heat and cools the blood, activates blood circulation and disperses spots, dispels wind and unblocks the collaterals.
[Applications]
1. Used for blood-heat purpura, often combined with Moutan Cortex (Danpi), Red Peony Root (Chishao), and Lithospermum (Zicao). This herb can be used to treat thrombocytopenic purpura.
2. Used for traumatic swelling and bruising, blood stasis dysmenorrhea. For traumatic swelling and pain, soak the herb in wine for oral use, and apply fresh herb pounded and stir-fried with wine topically, or pound together with Eupolyphaga and scallion, then reposition and bandage the affected area; for dysmenorrhea, it can be combined with Herba Lycopi (Luhancao) and decocted for oral administration.
3. Used for rheumatic arthralgia, muscle and bone contracture, limb numbness; can be combined with Clematis (Weilingxian), Haifengteng, Angelica (Danggui), Achyranthes (Niuxi), etc., soaked in wine or decocted for oral use.
Currently commonly used for treating pneumonia, acute appendicitis, bacillary dysentery, abscesses, stomatitis, and various tumors such as gastric cancer, rectal cancer, liver cancer, esophageal cancer, pancreatic cancer, etc.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 9–15 g; or soaked in wine. External use: appropriate amount, pounded and applied topically.
[Cautions] Contraindicated in yin deficiency with fire excess and pregnancy. Should be decocted first or decocted for a long time.

1. Chemical constituents: The whole plant contains levomenol methyl ether, isopsoralen, protopine acid, succinic acid, flavonoid glycosides, and coumarin derivatives. It also contains volatile oils.
2. Pharmacological effects: Herba Sarcandrae exhibits varying degrees of inhibitory effects on Staphylococcus aureus and its resistant strains, Streptococcus A, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Moraxella catarrhalis, Haemophilus influenzae, Salmonella typhi, Escherichia coli, etc.; its volatile oil and extract inhibit leukemia 615 cells, lung adenocarcinoma 615, breast cancer cells, Ehrlich ascites carcinoma, sarcoma, Walker carcinoma, etc.; it promotes fracture healing; it promotes repair of experimental gastric ulcers, increases gastric juice secretion, and stimulates appetite.
3. Clinical reports: 1) Gastric ulcer: Using Herba Sarcandrae extract tablets, each tablet equivalent to 2.5 g raw herb, orally 3 tablets per dose, 3 times daily, for 1 month as a course. In 50 cases, 31 cured, 8 markedly effective, 7 effective, 4 ineffective. [Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1980, (8):45] 2) Primary thrombocytopenic purpura: Using Herba Sarcandrae tablets (each containing 2 g raw herb), orally 6 tablets per dose, 3 times daily, reduced dose for children. In 26 cases, mucosal and visceral bleeding relieved within 1–4 days after medication; skin petechiae, ecchymosis, and purpura disappeared within 7–15 days; platelet counts rechecked within 10 days were above 1.0×10^11/L; bleeding time normalized. [Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1980, (10):30] 3) Acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis in elderly: On the basis of conventional Western medicine treatment including antispasmodics, cough relief, and expectorants, intravenous drip of Herba Sarcandrae injection was added, resulting in a total effective rate of 85.4%, significantly higher than the control group without Herba Sarcandrae (79.2%). [New Chinese Medicine, 2003, 35(11):65] 4) Acute mastitis: Herba Sarcandrae injection 10 ml added to 250 ml 0.9% sodium chloride injection for intravenous drip once daily; in 98 cases, 81 cured, 11 effective, 6 ineffective, total effective rate 93.88%, superior to penicillin control group.
