[Overview] This herb is also known as vinegar willow fruit, sour thorn, and sand jujube. It is the mature fruit of Hippophae rhamnoides L. of the Elaeagnaceae family. It is mainly produced in North China, Northwest China, and Sichuan Province. The fruit is harvested in autumn and winter when mature or frozen hard, impurities are removed, and then it is either sun-dried directly or steamed before sun-drying.
[Properties] Sour and astringent in taste, warm in nature. Enters the Lung, Liver, and Stomach meridians.
[Actions] Stops cough and resolves phlegm, strengthens the stomach and aids digestion, activates blood circulation and disperses blood stasis.
[Applications]
1. Used for cough with excessive phlegm and sore throat. For cough with excessive phlegm, it can be powdered equally with licorice, white raisins, gardenia, and Aucklandia, with a small amount of borneol added, taken with warm boiled water; for sore throat, juice can be mashed and taken with boiled water.
2. Used for stomach pain, indigestion, and gastric ulcer; can be decocted alone or made into a paste for administration.
3. Used for chest pain due to blood stasis, irregular menstruation, and amenorrhea; can be combined with peach kernel and safflower.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 3–9 g; or incorporated into pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical Constituents: Sea buckthorn fruit contains flavonoids such as isorhamnetin, isorhamnetin 3-O-β-D-glucoside, isorhamnetin 3-O-β-D-rutinoside, rutin, astragalin, and low-sugar glycosides with quercetin and kaempferol as aglycones. It also contains vitamins A, B1, B2, C, E, dehydroascorbic acid, folic acid, carotene, carotenoids, catechins, anthocyanins, and others.
2. Pharmacological Effects: Sea buckthorn significantly enhances cellular and humoral immune functions; its juice has anticancer effects by effectively blocking the synthesis and carcinogenesis of N-nitroso compounds in rats. Both sea buckthorn juice and oil exhibit antitumor activity; in vitro, the juice can kill S180, P388, L1210, and SGC9901 cells. Total flavonoids from sea buckthorn increase myocardial nutritive blood flow in mice, improve myocardial microcirculation, reduce myocardial oxygen consumption, and have antiarrhythmic effects. In healthy individuals, oral administration of total flavonoids enhances cardiac contractility and pump function, reduces peripheral vascular resistance, and increases vascular elasticity. Sea buckthorn juice promotes hematopoietic cells, reduces whole blood viscosity, lowers blood lipids, and inhibits thrombosis formation; sea buckthorn oil has hepatoprotective effects and also exhibits antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities.
3. Clinical Reports:
1) Reflux esophagitis: Sea buckthorn seed oil 5 ml each time (each ml contains 0.95 g of crude drug), taken orally three times daily half an hour after meals; severe patients take an additional dose before sleep. Among 80 cases treated, 24 were cured, 36 markedly effective, 14 effective, and 6 ineffective, with a total effective rate of 92.5%. 2) Chronic ulcerative colitis: Sea buckthorn juice (6 times concentrated) 15 g, Coptis chinensis and Stachyurus himalaicus 5 g each, soaked in 100 ml water for half an hour, retained as an enema, administered for 15 consecutive days as one course. Among 30 cases treated, 24 cured, 6 effective; 23 cases were cured after one course. [Chinese Rural Medicine, 1995, (5): 25]
3) Cervical erosion: After menstruation, clean the vulva with Jieeryin solution every night, then insert one compound sea buckthorn oil suppository deeply into the vagina for 7 days as one course; 2–3 courses are required. Among 40 cases treated, 19 cured, 15 markedly effective, 3 effective, 3 ineffective, total effective rate 92.5%. [Medical Theory and Practice, 2001, 14(3): 247]
4) Burns: Sea buckthorn oil gauze dressing (ratio of sea buckthorn oil to gauze 3:1, changed every other day) was used in 100 cases; compared with Vaseline gauze dressing, the average healing time was shortened by about one week. [Qinghai Medical Journal, 1987, (2): 5]
