[Overview] This herb is also known as Xieye, Paozhuyie, and Xieye Tea. It is the leaf of the Fabaceae family plants Cassia angustifolia Vahl. (narrow-leaved senna) or Cassia acutifolia Delile (sharp-leaved senna). Narrow-leaved senna is native to tropical Africa and has been introduced and cultivated in Taiwan, Guangxi, and Yunnan of China; sharp-leaved senna is native to Egypt and has been introduced and cultivated in Taiwan, Hainan, and Yunnan of China. Leaves are harvested on sunny days in summer and autumn, promptly spread out to dry with frequent turning, avoiding piling too thickly to prevent yellowing, and dried thoroughly.
[Properties] Taste: sweet and bitter; nature: cold. Enters the Large Intestine meridian.
[Actions] Clears heat and promotes bowel movements, reduces food accumulation and stagnation, promotes urination and reduces edema.
[Applications]
1. Used for constipation due to heat accumulation and edema with distension. For real heat accumulation causing constipation and abdominal distension, it can be used alone as a tea or decocted with Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae); or combined with Zhishi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus), Houpo (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis), and other herbs. For edema and distension, it can be combined with Dafupi (Pericarpium Arecae), Erchou (Rhizoma Imperatae), and others.
2. Used for edema, abdominal fullness, and ascites; can be taken alone as a tea or combined with Dafupi and Qianjiuzi (Semen Pharbitidis). Senna leaf tea is often used before abdominal surgery or gastrointestinal X-ray imaging to induce bowel movements and cleanse the intestines; or in the early postoperative period to restore intestinal function and prevent postoperative intestinal adhesions.
[Dosage and Administration] Oral administration: decoction 2–6 g, taken later; or as tea; or powdered, 1.5–3 g.
[Cautions] Contraindicated in patients with deficiency, pregnant women, during menstruation, and lactation.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: Senna leaf contains sennosides, rhein, emodin, and rhein methyl ether.
2. Pharmacological effects: Senna leaf has a significant laxative effect; the main active laxative components are sennosides A and B. It has a notable hemostatic effect on gastric and duodenal bleeding. Oral administration of senna leaf increases platelet count and fibrinogen content, shortens coagulation time, activated coagulation time, plasma recalcification time, and clot retraction time. Senna leaf extract inhibits the growth of various microorganisms including Escherichia coli, Proteus, Shigella, group A Streptococcus, Candida albicans, and certain pathogenic skin fungi. Intraperitoneal injection of sennosides restores reduced intestinal mucosal histamine levels to normal; it has curare-like effects, blocking neuromuscular junction impulse transmission and preventing acetylcholine binding to M receptors, causing muscle relaxation.
3. Clinical reports: 1) Constipation: dry senna leaf 3–10 g soaked in boiling water for 5–10 minutes, taken warm once, treated 137 cases of senile constipation, hypertension with arteriosclerosis heart disease, postoperative and postpartum constipation, with a total effective rate of 95.1%.
