[Overview] This herb is also known as Daodouzi, Daobadou, and Madou Dou. It is the mature seed of Canavalia gladiata (Jacq.) DC., a leguminous plant. It is mainly produced in Jiangsu, Anhui, Hunan, Sichuan, and other regions. The fruit is harvested in autumn when mature, the seeds are shelled and sun-dried.

[Properties] Sweet in taste, warm in nature. Enters the spleen and kidney meridians.

[Actions] Warms the middle burner and lowers qi, benefits the kidney and replenishes the primordial energy.

[Applications]
1. Used for persistent hiccups; can be taken alone as a powdered seed. When combined with clove and persimmon calyx, the effect is more pronounced. Because Semen Canavaliae is warm in nature, it is especially suitable for persistent hiccups of a deficiency-cold type.
2. Used for kidney deficiency lower back pain; can be combined with Eucommia ulmoides (Duzhong) and Dipsacus asper (Xuduan). It can also be cooked and eaten wrapped in pork kidney and eight other ingredients. For lower back pain caused by sprain, it can be combined with Eupatorium japonicum (Zelan) and Melia toosendan (Chuanlianzi).
Additionally, Semen Canavaliae can be used for whooping cough, pediatric hernia, and nasal congestion.
