[Overview] This herb is also known as Ju Pi, Juzi Pi, Guang Ju Pi, and Hong Pi. It is the mature peel of Citrus reticulata Blanco and its cultivated varieties from the Rutaceae family. The medicinal material is divided into “Chen Pi” and “Guang Chen Pi.” Chen Pi refers to the peel of mandarin orange, Fuyu mandarin, Zhuju mandarin, and Gan, produced in Sichuan, Zhejiang, Fujian, Jiangxi, Hunan, and other regions; Guang Chen Pi refers to the peel of Chazhi mandarin, Sihui mandarin, etc., produced in Guangdong’s Xinhui, Sihui, and other places. The fruit is harvested when ripe from October to December, the peel is removed and dried in shade or ventilated conditions. Older peel is preferred, hence the name “Chen Pi.”
[Properties] The taste is pungent and bitter; the nature is warm. It enters the spleen and lung meridians.
[Actions] Regulates qi and strengthens the spleen; dries dampness and transforms phlegm.
[Applications]
1. Used for epigastric and abdominal distension, belching, poor appetite caused by spleen and stomach qi stagnation. Often combined with Zhi Ke (Fructus Aurantii), Hou Po (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis), Mu Xiang (Radix Aucklandiae). For spleen and stomach deficiency with qi stagnation, combined with Dang Shen (Radix Codonopsis), Bai Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae), formulas such as Wu Wei Yi Gong San and Liu Jun Zi Tang are used. For qi stagnation with food retention, combined with Shan Zha (Fructus Crataegi), Shen Qu (Massa Medicata Fermentata), formulas like Bao He Wan are applied. For abdominal pain and diarrhea due to liver qi invading the spleen, combined with Bai Zhu, Bai Shao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), Fang Feng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), formulas such as Tong Xie Yao Fang are used.
2. Used for nausea and vomiting regardless of cold or heat, deficiency or excess. For vomiting due to stomach cold, combined with Sheng Jiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), formula such as Ju Pi Tang is used. For vomiting due to stomach heat, combined with Zhu Ru (Caulis Bambusae in Taeniam), formula such as Wen Dan Tang is used. For vomiting with mixed deficiency and excess and stomach heat, combined with Dang Shen, Zhu Ru, Sheng Jiang, formula such as Ju Pi Zhu Ru Tang is applied.
3. Used for phlegm-damp retention, cough with excessive phlegm, chest fullness and oppression, often combined with Ban Xia (Rhizoma Pinelliae), Fu Ling (Poria), formulas such as Er Chen Tang. For phlegm-damp obstruction with epigastric and abdominal fullness, chest oppression, poor appetite, greasy tongue coating, combined with Cang Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis), Chuan Po (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis), Fu Ling, formulas such as Ping Wei San are used. For phlegm-damp chest oppression with qi counterflow, combined with Ban Xia, Fu Ling, Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), formulas such as Er Chen Tang are used. For spleen and lung deficiency with phlegm, combined with Dang Shen, Bai Zhu, Fu Ling, Ban Xia, formulas such as Liu Jun Zi Tang are applied. For phlegm-heat cough, combined with Zhi Shi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus), Huang Qin (Radix Scutellariae), Gua Lou Ren (Semen Trichosanthis), Dan Nan Xing (Arisaema Cum Bile), formulas such as Qing Qi Hua Tan Wan are used.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 3–9 g; or used in pills and powders.
[Cautions] Use with caution in cases of yin deficiency with dry cough, hemoptysis, hematemesis, or internal excess heat.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical Constituents: Chen Pi contains volatile oils, mainly limonene, and also α-thujene, α-pinene, β-pinene, β-phellandrene, sabinene, octanal, α-terpinene, α-terpineol, para-cymene, linalool, thymol, citronellol, and others. Additionally, it contains hesperidin, neoeriocitrin, naringin, flavonoids, citral, β-sitosterol, and hydroxytyrosol.
2. Pharmacological Effects: The volatile oil of Chen Pi mildly stimulates the gastrointestinal tract, promoting digestive juice secretion and expelling intestinal gas; the volatile oil also has an expectorant effect, facilitating phlegm expectoration, mainly due to limonene and pinene. Chen Pi inhibits experimental gastric ulcers induced by pyloric ligation in rats; it dilates coronary arteries, increases coronary blood flow, and has a blood pressure elevating effect. Chen Pi pectin has a preventive effect on atherosclerosis induced by high-fat diet. It inhibits Staphylococcus aureus, Shigella flexneri, Proteus species, and hesperidin can prevent influenza virus infection.
3. Clinical Reports: 1) Pertussis: Oral administration of snake gall and Chen Pi powder (0.6 g per dose), 1/5 to 1/2 dose twice daily. Among 60 cases treated, 56 cured, 2 markedly effective, 2 improved. [Journal of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine, 1985, 5(11): 695] 2) Ulcerative colitis: Chen Pi 15 g, dry lotus leaf 10 g, Sha Ren (Fructus Amomi) 2 g, made into powder and brewed with boiling water, taken twice daily morning and evening. Among 30 cases, cure rate 56.7%, total effective rate 90%. [Zhejiang Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1991, 26(4): 156] 3) Acute mastitis: Chen Pi 70 g, decocted once daily, 15 days per course. Among 45 cases, 38 cured, 6 markedly effective, 1 ineffective, total effective rate 98%. [Tangshan Medicine, 1989, 7(2): 10] 4) Chilblains: Fresh tangerine peel 3–4 pieces, Sheng Jiang 30 g, decoction used for soaking and rubbing affected area with residue once nightly for 30 minutes. Among 30 cases, all showed good effect. [Fujian Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1986, (1): 62]
