[Overview] This herb is also known as Da Tongcao, Bai Tongcao, Tong Dahai, and Da Mutong. It is the pith of the stem of Tetrapanax papyriferus (Hook.) K.Koch, a plant of the Araliaceae family. It is mainly produced in Guizhou, Sichuan, Yunnan, and Guangxi provinces, with additional production in Hunan, Fujian, and Taiwan. The stems are harvested in autumn, cut into sections, and the fresh pith is extracted and sun-dried thoroughly.
[Properties] Sweet and bland in taste, slightly cold in nature. Enters the Lung and Stomach meridians.
[Actions] Clears heat and promotes urination, facilitates the flow of qi and promotes lactation.
[Applications]
1. Used for stranguria, edema, and difficult urination. This herb is mild and gentle, generally suitable for mild cases of internal damp-heat and water retention. It treats hot stranguria with scanty, painful urination and is often combined with Dong Kui Zi (Malva seed), Hua Shi (Talcum), Shi Wei (Pyrrosia leaf), as in the formula Tongcao Yin Zi (通草饮子). For edema and difficult urination, it is commonly used with Zhu Ling (Polyporus), Fu Ling (Poria), Fang Ji (Stephania root), and Da Fu Pi (Areca peel). For damp-warm febrile diseases with chest oppression and painful, reddish urination, it is often combined with Yi Yi Ren (Coix seed), Bai Kou Ren (Amomum seed), and Hua Shi, as in San Ren Tang (Three Seed Decoction).
2. Used for insufficient lactation or failure of milk flow postpartum, often combined with Chuan Shan Jia (Manis pentadactyla scales) and Wang Bu Liu Xing (Vaccaria seed). In folk practice, it is often cooked with pig’s trotters to promote lactation.
