[Overview] This herb is also known as Jingkulan, Jinniudan, Kudidan, and Jiulianzi. It is the tuberous root of plants from the Menispermaceae family: Tinosporasagittata (Oliv.) Gagnep. or Tinosporacapillipes Gagnep. It is mainly produced in Hunan, Hubei, Guangxi, and Sichuan provinces. The tuberous roots are harvested in autumn and winter, with stems and fibrous roots removed, then washed, sliced, and dried by baking or sun-drying.

[Properties] Bitter in taste and cold in nature. Enters the Lung and Stomach meridians.

[Actions] Clears heat and detoxifies, benefits the throat, relieves pain.

[Applications] 1. Used for throat swelling and pain due to heat toxin; can be decocted or juiced for oral administration, or sliced and the juice held in the throat; if the throat swelling suppurates and ulcerates, it can be finely powdered with borneol (bingpian) and blown into the throat.
2. Used for carbuncles, furuncles, scrofula, and mumps; can be taken as a decoction or externally applied as a vinegar paste. Also used to treat poisonous snake bites by taking the powder with wine and applying a wine-based paste of the powder around the wound.
3. Used for diarrhea, dysentery, and epigastric and abdominal heat pain; can be combined with Coptidis Rhizoma (huanglian), Pulsatillae Radix (baitouweng), Moutan Cortex (danpi), and others. Additionally, it can be used for pelvic inflammatory disease, nephritis, and pediatric asthmatic bronchitis.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 3–9 g; powder, 1–2 g per dose. External use: appropriate amount.

[Cautions] Use with caution in cases of spleen and stomach deficiency and in the absence of heat toxin accumulation.

[Modern Research] 1. Chemical constituents: Stems contain tinosporaside, tinosporide, isotinosporide, palmatine, and jingguolan glycosides. Roots contain tinosporaside, palmatine, africanol, and jinqintengning alkaloids.
2. Pharmacological effects: Decoction of Radix Tinosporae inhibits S180 sarcoma transplanted tumors; shows strong inhibitory effects against Staphylococcus aureus, acid-fast bacilli, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis; bitter components in aqueous or alcoholic extracts reduce fasting blood glucose and increase glucose tolerance.
3. Clinical reports: (1) Pharyngitis and related conditions: Concentrated aqueous extract capsules equivalent to 20 g raw herb per 1 g capsule, each capsule 0.3 g. Oral administration, adults 4 capsules per dose, three times daily. In 270 cases of pharyngitis, acute tonsillitis, upper respiratory tract infection, pneumonia, bronchitis, and acute gastroenteritis, the total effective rate was 94.8%, with a cure rate of 50.4%. [Jilin Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1990, (6):31] (2) Infusion phlebitis: 100 g Radix Tinosporae soaked in 500 ml 75% ethanol in a sealed glass container for over 7 days to prepare an infusion.
