[Overview] This herb is also known as Bizi, Feishi, Chiguo, and Xiangfei. It is the mature seed of Torreya grandis Fort., a plant of the Taxaceae family. It is mainly produced in Zhejiang province, with additional production in Jiangsu, Anhui, Jiangxi, Fujian, and Hunan provinces. Seeds are harvested in autumn when mature, with the fleshy false seed coat removed, then washed and sun-dried.

[Properties] Sweet in taste, neutral in nature. Enters the Large Intestine, Stomach, and Lung meridians.

[Actions] Expels parasites, reduces food accumulation, moistens dryness.

[Applications]
1. Used for intestinal parasitic infections including tapeworm, hookworm, pinworm, roundworm, and Trichostrongylus. For treating Taenia saginata (tapeworm), often combined with Areca catechu (Binglang) and Artemisia capillaris (Wuti); for hookworm, combined with Stemona root (Baibu), realgar (Xionghuang), and garlic; for pinworm, combined with Bidens pilosa (Bianxu) and Areca catechu.
2. Used for dry cough due to lung dryness. Mild cases can be treated by stir-frying and eating alone; severe cases should be combined with Glehnia root (Shashen), Ophiopogon root (Maidong), and donkey-hide gelatin (Ejiao).
3. Used for dry constipation of the intestines. Can be used alone or combined with hemp seed (Huomaren), Prunus seed (Yuliren), and Angelica sinensis (Danggui).

[Dosage and Administration] Oral administration: decoct 9–15 g with the shell intact, crushed before decocting; or 10–40 seeds, stir-fried and shelled, chew the kernel; or incorporated into pills or powders. Larger doses are recommended for expelling parasites, taken as a single dose; smaller doses are used regularly for constipation.

[Cautions] Use with caution in cases of spleen deficiency with diarrhea or loose stools due to intestinal laxity.

1. Chemical constituents: Semen Torreyae contains fatty oil, with unsaturated fatty acids accounting for as much as 74.88%.
2. Pharmacological effects: Torreya seed oil has anthelmintic effects against hookworm.
3. Clinical reports: For pediatric pinworm infection, equal parts of shelled and roasted Semen Torreyae and raw rhubarb are ground into powder and taken with boiling water three times daily. The dose per administration is (age + 1) × 0.4 g, taken continuously for one week. In a total of 96 cases treated, the overall effective rate was 100%.
