[Overview] This herb is also known as Yu Baifu. It is the tuber of Typhonium giganteum Engl., a plant of the Araceae family. It is mainly produced in Yuxian and Changge of Henan province, and also found in Tianshui and Wudu of Gansu, Hubei, Shanxi, Hebei, Sichuan, Shaanxi, and other regions. It is harvested in winter by digging up, removing the fibrous roots and outer skin, then sun-dried.
[Properties] Pungent in taste, warm in nature, toxic. Enters the Stomach and Liver meridians.
[Actions] Dispel wind and phlegm, unblock the meridians, detoxify and relieve pain.
[Applications]
1. Used for wind-phlegm obstruction after stroke, hemiplegia, and facial paralysis. Treats excessive wind-phlegm obstruction, meridian spasm, limb paralysis, and numbness of hands and feet. Commonly combined with Tian Nan Xing (Arisaema), Ban Xia (Pinellia), and Jiang Can (Bombyx batryticatus). If convulsions are present, can be combined with Quan Xie (Scorpio) and Wu Gong (Scolopendra). For facial paralysis caused by wind-cold-damp invasion and wind-phlegm blocking the meridians, often used with Jiang Can and Quan Xie.
2. Used for unilateral or bilateral headache. For Yangming headache caused by wind-cold-damp, often combined with Qiang Huo (Notopterygium), Xi Xin (Asarum), and Bai Zhi (Angelica dahurica).
3. Used for phlegm nodules, scrofula, and poisonous snake bites. For scrofula, fresh herb is pounded and applied topically to the affected area; for poisonous snake bites, juice can be taken internally and the wound externally treated.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction 3–6 g; powder 0.5–1 g, preferably processed before use. External use: appropriate amount, pounded and applied or powdered and applied as a paste.
[Cautions] Contraindicated in cases of blood deficiency with wind, internal heat causing convulsions, and pregnancy. Use caution with raw herb internally.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: The tuber contains β-sitosterol, β-sitosterol D-glucoside, myo-inositol, choline, uracil, succinic acid, tyrosine, valine, palmitic acid, linoleic acid, oleic acid, triacylglycerols of linolenic acid, di-palmitoyl glycerol, and contains Baifuzi lectin.
2. Pharmacological effects: aqueous extracts of raw and processed Baifuzi increase sub-threshold pentobarbital sodium-induced sleep rate in a dose-dependent manner; new and old processed products have anti-inflammatory effects similar to raw herb; Baifuzi injection shows certain inhibitory effects on Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
3. Clinical reports: (1) Cervical lymphatic tuberculosis: fresh Baifuzi 20–60 g, washed and pounded into a paste, evenly applied to the lesion and bandaged, changed twice daily; or fresh Baifuzi 10–30 g, washed and decocted, one dose daily. Using internal treatment alone on 35 cases of lymphatic tuberculosis resulted in 31 cured and 4 improved; combined internal and external treatment on 10 cases resulted in 8 cured and 2 ineffective. [Hebei Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1990, 12(2):5]
(2) Facial nerve paralysis: Baifuzi 20 g, cinnamon and donkey-hide gelatin 15 g each. Baifuzi and cinnamon are ground finely, decocted with 200 g aged vinegar to about 50 g, donkey-hide gelatin melted in, spread on white cloth and applied to affected side, simultaneously taking a cup of ginger sugar water to enhance efficacy. Treated 50 cases: 45 cured, 4 effective, 1 ineffective; total effective rate 98%. [Chinese Rural Doctor, 1996, (12):38]
