[Overview] This herb is also known as Gouqi root, Gouqi root bark, and Gounaizi root bark. It is the root bark of plants from the Solanaceae family: Lycium chinense Mill. or Ningxia Lycium barbarum L. It is produced throughout China. The roots are dug up in early spring or late autumn, washed clean of soil, the bark is peeled off, and then sun-dried.
[Properties] Sweet in taste, cold in nature. Enters the Lung, Liver, and Kidney meridians.
[Actions] Clears deficiency heat, drains Lung fire, and cools the blood.
[Applications]
1. Used for yin deficiency with vigorous fire, bone steaming fever, and night sweating. Commonly combined with Qinghao (Artemisia annua), Biejia (Trionyx sinensis shell), and Yin Chaihu (Stellaria dichotoma) in formulas such as Qinggu San (Clear the Bone Powder). For infantile malnutrition with fever at onset, often combined with Biejia, Huhuanglian (Picrorhiza scrophulariiflora), and Qinghao, as in Biejia Qinghao Yin (Turtle Shell and Artemisia Drink). For prolonged malnutrition fever with damage to qi, blood, and body fluids, it can be combined with Huangqi (Astragalus membranaceus), Biejia, and Shudi (Rehmannia glutinosa prepared root), as in Biejia San (Turtle Shell Powder).
2. Used for Lung heat cough and asthma with yellow sputum, often combined with Sangbaipi (Morus alba root bark) and Gancao (Glycyrrhiza uralensis), as in Xiebai San (Drain the White Powder). For yin deficiency with vigorous fire, dry cough with little sputum or blood in sputum, it can be combined with Baibu (Stemona root), Sheng Dihuang (Rehmannia glutinosa raw root), and Chuan Beimu (Fritillaria cirrhosa).
3. Used for bleeding due to blood heat such as vomiting blood, nosebleed, and hematuria, often combined with Baimaogen (Imperata cylindrica root) and Cebaiye (Platycladus orientalis leaf).
Additionally, this herb can be used for diabetes mellitus, best combined with Sheng Dihuang, Maidong (Ophiopogon japonicus), Tianhuafen (Trichosanthes root). It can also be used for hypertension with heat-clearing and blood pressure-lowering effects, combined with Xiakucao (Prunella vulgaris), Mudanpi (Paeonia suffruticosa bark), and Xixiancao (Siegesbeckia orientalis).
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 9–15 g. Or incorporated into pills or powders. External use: decoction for gargling or washing; or powdered and sprinkled; or made into a paste for topical application.
[Cautions] Contraindicated in cases of exterior wind-cold with fever and in spleen deficiency with loose stools.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: The root bark contains cinnamic acid and various phenolic compounds, betaine. It also contains digupiside, lyciumoside A, lyciumoside B, β-sitosterol, linoleic acid, linolenic acid, and tritriacontanoic acid.
2. Pharmacological effects: Lycium Cortex has antipyretic, antihypertensive, hypoglycemic, and lipid-lowering effects; it shows strong inhibitory effects against Salmonella typhi, Salmonella paratyphi A, and Shigella flexneri; its decoction significantly increases interleukin-2 levels reduced by cyclophosphamide in mouse spleen cells; it has a significant excitatory effect on isolated uteri of non-pregnant rats and mice.
3. Clinical reports: 1) Hypertension: 60 g Lycium Cortex boiled with 3 bowls of water to 1 bowl, with a small amount of sugar or pork, taken every other day. Treated 50 cases of primary hypertension with a total effective rate of 94%. [Guangdong Medical Journal, 1983,(4):3] 2) Diabetes: 50 g Lycium Cortex decocted as tea, combined with 100 mg vitamin C intravenous injection and 100 mg vitamin B1 intramuscular injection twice daily. Treated 16 cases with satisfactory results. [Shanghai Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1984,(9):11] 3) Non-healing wounds: Fresh Lycium Cortex washed and mashed applied to affected area; for wounds about 1 cm diameter, 2 g applied once daily. Treated 37 cases of infected wounds and 13 cases of non-healing cellulitis post-incision and drainage, all cured. [Chinese Journal of Nursing, 1986,(4): supplement 2] 4) Corns and calluses: Lycium Cortex and safflower powdered, 3–5 g each, mixed with vegetable oil to a paste, applied on gauze and placed on affected area, changed every 3 days. Treated 79 cases of corns with 64 cured, 13 markedly effective, 2 improved; treated 15 cases of calluses with 8 cured, 5 markedly effective, 1 improved; total effective rate 98.9%.
