[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: Schizonepeta contains volatile oil, whose main components are (+)-menthone, racemic menthone, and a small amount of (+)-limonene. It also contains α-pinene, camphene, β-pinene, isomenthone, pulegone, isopulegone, and others. From the flower spikes, schizonepetosides A, B, C, D, and E, schizonepetol, schizonepetadiol and other monoterpenes, as well as flavonoids such as apigenin 7-O-glucoside and kaempferol, have been isolated. Three new benzofuran compounds were isolated from the flower stalks.
2. Pharmacological effects: Decoctions and tinctures of Schizonepeta have certain antipyretic effects; its volatile oil lowers body temperature in normal rats. The decoction has strong antibacterial effects against Staphylococcus aureus and Corynebacterium diphtheriae; it also inhibits Bacillus anthracis, Streptococcus beta-hemolyticus, Salmonella typhi, Shigella, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis to some extent. Decoctions or volatile oils exhibit anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and sedative effects; the oil has notable expectorant and antiasthmatic effects. Charred Schizonepeta stops bleeding, while raw does not. The oil slows heart rate and increases contractility in isolated toad hearts; at higher concentrations, it markedly inhibits cardiac contraction leading to arrest, but heartbeat resumes after solution replacement.
3. Clinical reports: (1) Postpartum hemorrhagic dizziness: 30 g of Schizonepeta spikes charred to dark yellow, ground and sifted; 6 g taken each time with 30 g of infant urine. In 25 cases, 18 cured, 5 improved, 2 ineffective. [Sichuan Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1987,(6):35] (2) Pediatric bronchial asthma: One large radish cut in half, a hollow made in the center; 10 g Schizonepeta spikes, 15 ml honey, and 5 ml sesame oil placed in the hollow; radish heated until nearly cooked. Remove spikes before administration; take the liquid and surrounding radish before sleep. In 13 cases, 11 cured, 2 improved. [Zhongyuan Medical Journal, 1982,(6):280]
