[Overview] This herb is also known as Weigen, Luchaigen, and Lutou. It is the rhizome of Phragmites communis Trin, a plant of the Poaceae family. It is distributed throughout most regions of China, mainly produced in Anqing and Bengbu of Anhui, Qidong of Jiangsu, Hangzhou and Ningbo of Zhejiang, and Xiaogan of Hubei. It can be harvested year-round. After removing buds, fibrous roots, and membranous leaves, it is used fresh or dried.

[Properties] Sweet in taste, cold in nature. Enters the Lung and Stomach meridians.

[Actions] Clears heat and generates fluids, relieves vexation and stops vomiting, promotes urination and unblocks strangury, detoxifies and disperses rashes.

[Applications]
1. Used for heat diseases injuring fluids, vexation, and thirst; often combined with raw Gypsum Fibrosum, Ophiopogon japonicus, Trichosanthes root, etc. The fresh herb has stronger medicinal effect. Fresh juice combined with water chestnut juice, pear juice, and Ophiopogon juice can treat severe heat with fluid injury, symptoms including dry mouth, vexation, and sticky white foamy vomiting, as in the formula Wuzhi Yin (Five Juices Drink). For early-stage warm diseases with unresolved exterior symptoms, it is often combined with Lonicera japonica, Forsythia suspensa, and Schizonepeta spikes, as in the formula Yinqiao San.
2. Used for stomach heat vomiting; mild cases use it alone, severe cases combine with bamboo shavings, fresh ginger, polished rice, etc., as in the formula Lugen Yinzi.
3. Used for cough and lung abscess. For lung heat cough, often combined with Scutellaria baicalensis, Zhejiang fritillary, Trichosanthes fruit, etc.; for wind-heat cough, combined with mulberry leaf, chrysanthemum, Platycodon root, etc., as in the formula Sangju Yin; for lung abscess with purulent sputum, often combined with Coix seed, winter melon seed, Platycodon root, Houttuynia cordata, etc.
4. Used for strangury syndromes. For heat strangury with painful urination, often combined with Akebia stem, Plantago seed, talcum, etc.; for bloody strangury, combined with Imperata root, small thistle, and ramie root.
Additionally, this herb can be used for sore throat, oral ulcers, wind-fire toothache, and constipation.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 15–30 g; fresh herb 60–120 g; or fresh herb mashed for juice. External use: appropriate amount, decoction for washing.

[Cautions] Use with caution in cases of spleen and stomach deficiency cold.

1. Chemical constituents: Rhizoma Phragmitis contains various vitamins, proteins, fats, carbohydrates, amino acids, fatty acids, sterols, tocopherols, polyphenols, coixol, wheat flavones, xylose, and glucose.
2. Pharmacological effects: A polysaccharide extracted from Rhizoma Phragmitis has immunostimulatory effects, promoting lymphocyte transformation.
3. Clinical reports: Constipation—using 500 g Rhizoma Phragmitis and 750 g honey. The rhizome is decocted in water, concentrated, and mixed with honey to form a paste. Oral administration, 30 ml each time (reduced for children), three times daily before meals. A total of 76 cases were treated with good effect.
