[Overview] This herb is also known as Tongjingcao, Toothbrush Grass,偏头草 (Piantoucao), and Ear-picking Grass. It is the whole herb of Scutellaria barbata D.Don from the Lamiaceae family. It is produced in North China, Central South China, East China, South China, and Southwest China. It is harvested in summer and autumn when the stems and leaves are luxuriant, then cleaned and dried in the sun.

[Properties] It tastes pungent and bitter, with a cold nature. It enters the Lung, Liver, and Kidney meridians.

[Actions] Clears heat and detoxifies, disperses blood stasis, and promotes urination.

[Applications]
1. Used for heat toxin abscesses and swellings, snake bites; the fresh herb can be pounded and applied externally. It can also be combined with Viola yedoensis (Zihua Diding), Taraxacum (Pugongying), Siegesbeckia (Zaoxiu), and Scutellaria barbata internally and applied externally. For lung abscess, it can be combined with Houttuynia cordata (Yuxingcao) and Fagopyrum dibotrys (Jinqiaomai); for intestinal abscess, combined with Millettia reticulata (Hongteng) and Hedyotis diffusa (Baihuasheshecao); for sore throat, combined with Achyranthes bidentata (Tuniuxi), Agaricus blazei (Mabo), and Isatis root (Banlangen).
2. Used for traumatic injuries with bruising and pain; can be combined with frankincense (Ruxiang) and myrrh (Moyao).
3. Used for bleeding due to blood heat such as hematemesis, epistaxis, and hematuria; can be taken as juice or combined with other herbs according to symptoms. 1. Chemical constituents: The whole herb contains scutellarein, isoscutellarein, tectochrysin, baicalein, tectochrysin glycoside, β-sitosterol, alkaloids, etc. The root contains baicalein, 7-methylbaicalein, barbatic acid, 2′,5-dihydroxy-6′,7,8-trimethoxyflavone, and glycosides of campesterol, stigmasterol, and β-sitosterol.
2. Pharmacological effects: Scutellaria barbata has mild inhibitory effects on acute granulocytic leukemia; its decoction inhibits Staphylococcus aureus, Shigella flexneri, Salmonella typhi, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli. The contained scutellarein strongly antagonizes histamine-induced smooth muscle spasms and has good expectorant effects.
