[Overview] This herb is also known as Tufuling, Earth Bixie, Guoshanlong, and Mountain Chestnut. It is the rhizome of Smilax glabra Roxb., a plant of the Liliaceae family. It is produced in East China, Central South China, and Southwest China. Harvested in summer and autumn by digging up, removing fibrous roots, washing clean, and drying in the sun; or sliced thinly while fresh and then sun-dried.
[Properties] Sweet and bland in taste, neutral in nature. Enters the Liver, Kidney, Spleen, and Stomach meridians.
[Actions] Clears heat and detoxifies, promotes urination to reduce dampness and swelling.
[Applications]
1. Used for syphilis. Tufuling has been commonly used historically and presently for treating syphilis, either alone or combined with raw Coix seed (Sheng Yiren), Honeysuckle flower (Jinyinhua), Siler root (Fangfeng), Akebia stem (Mutong), etc. For patients with qi deficiency, Astragalus (Huangqi) and raw licorice (Sheng Gancao) may be added. Currently, Tufuling is often decocted with Honeysuckle flower, licorice, Lonicera stem (Rendongteng), and dandelion to treat active syphilis, latent syphilis, late-stage paralytic dementia, muscle and bone contracture, and congenital syphilitic stomatitis in children.
2. Used for urinary turbidity and dysentery. For urinary turbidity, combined with Akebia stem, dandelion, and Hedyotis diffusa; for bacterial dysentery, combined with Plantain herb and Andrographis.
3. Used for scrofula, goiter, ulcer toxins, carbuncles, eczema, dermatitis, common warts, and psoriasis. For scrofula and goiter, combined with Picrasma quassioides and Millettia reticulata; for ulcer and carbuncle toxins, combined with Honeysuckle flower and Forsythia; for eczema and psoriasis, combined with Sophora flavescens and Atractylodes, ground into powder and mixed with vinegar for topical application.
Additionally, Tufuling is used for lacquer allergy, chloasma, and leptospirosis. It is currently used to treat various cancers such as thyroid adenocarcinoma, digestive tract tumors, and bone cancer.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 10–60 g. External use: appropriate amount, ground into powder and applied topically.
[Cautions] Use with caution in patients with Liver and Kidney yin deficiency. Tufuling should not come into contact with iron utensils and should not be taken with tea.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: The rhizome contains astilbin, quercetin glycosides, 3-O-caffeoylshikimic acid, shikimic acid, ferulic acid, β-sitosterol, and others.
2. Pharmacological effects: Tufuling has anticancer effects; its ethyl acetate extract can prevent adrenaline-induced tachycardia, T wave inversion, ventricular premature beats, and rapid ventricular arrhythmias.
3. Clinical reports: 1) Psoriasis: 60 g of Tufuling ground coarsely and decocted, taken twice daily, 15 doses per course. Treated 50 cases with a total effective rate of 92%. [Heilongjiang Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1988,(3):24] 2) Erysipelas: 30 g Tufuling and 30 g wild chrysanthemum flower decocted twice, taken warm in two doses daily until finished. Treated 15 cases, all cured; 4 cured after 3 doses, 8 after 5 doses, 3 after 6 doses. [Journal of Jiangsu Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1980,(3):41] 3) Recurrent oral ulcers: 40 g Tufuling decocted as tea, one dose daily for 45 days. Treated 50 cases: 34 cured, 10 markedly effective, 4 effective, 2 ineffective. [Chinese Journal of Basic Medicine of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 2003,9(4):67] 4) Condyloma acuminatum: On top of conventional treatment, add 100 g Tufuling decocted as water substitute, one dose daily for 20 days per course. Treated 25 cases, all cured. [Chinese Folk Therapy, 2002,10(5):5]
