[Overview] This herb is also known as Mabiancao, Longyacao, Baimabiancao, and Tiemabiancao. It is the aerial part of Verbena officinalis L., belonging to the Verbenaceae family. It is distributed throughout China. Harvest in summer and autumn when flowers bloom, then dry in the sun.

[Properties] Bitter in taste, cold in nature. Enters the Liver and Spleen meridians.

[Actions] Clears heat and detoxifies, activates blood and removes blood stasis, promotes urination and reduces swelling.

[Applications]
1. Used for wind-heat common cold, influenza fever, sore throat; can be decocted alone. For influenza fever, it can be combined with Notopterygium (Qianghuo) and Artemisia annua (Qinghao); for sore throat, combined with Belamcanda (Shegan), Puffball mushroom (Mabo), and Platycodon (Jiegeng).
2. Used for damp-heat jaundice and dysentery. For the former, combined with Artemisia capillaris (Yinchen) and Gardenia (Shanzhi); for the latter, combined with Pulsatilla (Baitouweng) and Cortex Fraxini (Qinpi).
3. Used for blood stasis causing amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, irregular menstruation, abdominal masses, and traumatic injuries. For blood stasis amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, and irregular menstruation, combined with Cyperus (Xiangfu), Leonurus (Yimucao), Angelica (Danggui), Peach kernel (Taoren), and Safflower (Honghua); for abdominal masses, combined with Sparganium (Sanleng) and Curcuma (Ezhu); for traumatic injuries, combined with Safflower, Caesalpinia (Sumu), and Luodida.
4. Used for edema, ascites, and urinary difficulty; combined with Adzuki bean (Chixiaodou), Poria (Fuling), and Alisma (Zexie). This herb is often used to treat ascites due to late-stage schistosomiasis liver cirrhosis with certain efficacy.
5. Used for gum swelling and pain, toxic carbuncles; decoction used as mouthwash or applied topically. For gum swelling and pain, it can be combined with Gypsum (Shigao) and Anemarrhena (Zhimu) to enhance effect.
Additionally, juice of crushed herb mixed with wine or decocted alone can treat malaria; decoction used for fumigation and washing can treat acute and chronic eczema and female damp-heat causing vulvar itching and leukorrhea.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 15–30 g; fresh herb can be used up to 30–60 g; or juice can be taken. External use: appropriate amount, crushed and applied topically; decoction used for washing or gargling.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: The whole plant contains verbascoside, verbenalin, lupulone, β-sitosterol, ursolic acid, etc.; leaves contain verbenalin, adenosine, β-carotene; roots contain raffinose.
2. Pharmacological effects: aqueous and alcohol extracts have anti-inflammatory effects; aqueous extract has analgesic effect on electrically induced dental pulp pain in rabbits; inhibitory effects on Plasmodium, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Staphylococcus aureus, Shigella flexneri, and can kill Leptospira; decoction has certain antitussive effect, with β-sitosterol and verbascoside as active antitussive components.
3. Clinical reports: 1. Herpetic inflammation: use fresh Herb Verbenae 200–300 g, washed and chopped, decocted to 50–150 ml, one dose daily divided for oral or gargle use. For first 2–3 days, add Banlangen injection 2 ml intramuscularly twice daily. In 30 cases treated, 80% had fever reduction within 2 days, ulcers healed within 3 days; 93.5% healed within 4 days, shortening natural course. Acute mastitis: fresh Herb Verbenae 100 g or dry 50 g, with 2–3 eggs in shell, boiled with water until eggs cooked; eat eggs and drink soup, one dose daily.
