[Overview] This herb is also known as Northern Mistletoe, Willow Mistletoe, Yellow Mistletoe, and Taiwan Mistletoe. It is the leafy stem branch of Viscum coloratum (Komar.) Nakai, a plant of the family Loranthaceae. It is mainly produced in Henan, Liaoning, Jilin, Inner Mongolia, Anhui, Hunan, Zhejiang, and also found in Heilongjiang, Shanxi, Jiangxi, Shaanxi, Fujian, Hubei, Jiangsu, Qinghai, and other regions. Harvested from winter to the fourth spring, the coarse stems are removed, then dried in the shade or sun, or steamed before drying.
[Properties] Bitter in taste, neutral in nature. Enters the Liver and Kidney meridians.
[Actions] Tonifies the Liver and Kidneys, strengthens sinews and bones, dispels wind-dampness, and calms the fetus.
[Applications]
1. Used for soreness and pain in the lumbar region due to Liver and Kidney deficiency, weakness of sinews and bones, and weakness of feet and knees; often used together with Dipsaci Radix (Xu Duan), Eucommiae Cortex (Du Zhong), and Cibotii Rhizoma (Gou Ji).
2. Used for wind-damp painful obstruction syndrome with joint stiffness and pain. For chronic bi syndrome with Liver and Kidney deficiency accompanied by qi and blood deficiency and malnourished sinews and vessels, it can be combined with Radix Angelicae Pubescentis (Du Huo), Rehmanniae Radix (Di Huang), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Dang Gui), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fang Feng), and Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niu Xi).
3. Used for restless fetus or threatened miscarriage caused by Kidney qi deficiency, or for vaginal bleeding with abdominal pain and lumbar soreness; can be combined with Dipsaci Radix (Chuan Duan), Colla Corii Asini (E Jiao), and Artemisiae Argyi Folium (Ai Ye).
Additionally, in recent years it has been commonly used to treat headaches and dizziness associated with hypertension.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 9–15 g; or incorporated into pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount, crushed and applied topically.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: Viscum Herb mainly contains flavonoids such as 3′-methylquercetin, 3′-methylquercetin-3-glucoside, isorhamnetin-3-glucoside; triterpenoids including β-amyrin, β-acetylamyrin, β-amyrin diol, lupenol, oleanolic acid, betulinic acid; and glycosides such as syringin.
2. Pharmacological effects: Alcohol extracts of fresh Viscum leaves have antihypertensive effects; Viscum injection causes dilation of isolated rabbit coronary arteries, significantly increasing coronary blood flow, slowing heart rate, and exhibiting an initial inhibitory followed by an enhancing effect on myocardial contractility; Viscum injection protects against electrocardiogram changes induced by posterior pituitary hormone in animals, such as elevated T waves and ST segment elevation, and significantly reduces oxygen consumption of ischemic myocardium; total glycosides of Viscum significantly inhibit ADP-induced platelet aggregation in rabbits and arterial thrombosis formation; fresh juice of Viscum coloratum increases and normalizes phagocytic index; total alkaloids of Viscum show significant inhibitory effects on Lewis lung carcinoma, S37 solid tumors, Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC), Sarcoma 180 (S180), acute radiation syndrome (ARS), and L1210 leukemia, and notably inhibit pulmonary metastasis of Lewis lung carcinoma in mice.
Note: According to research, the ancient medicinal mistletoe (Sang Ji Sheng) originated from several species of different genera. Besides the currently used Taxillus species, it also included Viscum species, so their efficacies are basically similar. The current Pharmacopoeia of the People’s Republic of China lists Sang Ji Sheng and Viscum as separate entries, but their effects can be cross-referenced.
