[Overview] This herb is also known as Juzi Ren, Juzi He, Ju Mi, and Ju Ren. It is the mature seed of Citrus reticulata Blanco and its cultivated varieties, belonging to the Rutaceae family. It is mainly produced in Sichuan, Jiangxi, Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian, with additional production in Hunan and Jiangsu. Seeds are collected in autumn and winter during fruit consumption, then washed, sun-dried, or oven-dried.
[Properties] Bitter in taste, neutral in nature. Enters the Liver and Kidney meridians.
[Actions] Regulates Qi, disperses nodules, relieves pain.
[Applications]
1. Used for hernia pain and testicular swelling and pain; often combined with Chuan Lian Zi (Toosendan Fructus), Wu Yao (Linderae Radix), Wu Zhu Yu (Evodiae Fructus), and Ba Xiao Hui Xiang (Fennel Fructus). For treating flaccid hernia with scrotal swelling, hardened testicles, dragging sensation, and abdominal cramping radiating upward to the navel, it is commonly combined with Tao Ren (Persicae Semen), Yan Hu Suo (Corydalis Rhizoma), Zhi Shi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex), and Hai Zao (Sargassum), as in the formula Ju He Wan (橘核丸).
2. Used for early-stage breast abscess with swelling and pain before ulceration; can be used alone, lightly stir-fried and ground into powder, decocted with yellow wine and taken orally, and applied externally.
3. Used for kidney cold and low back pain due to cold-dampness descending; can be combined with Hu Lu Ba (Trigonellae Semen), Bu Gu Zhi (Psoraleae Fructus), Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), as in the formula Ju Xiang Wan (橘香丸).
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decocted as a decoction, 3–9 g; or incorporated into pills or powders.
[Cautions] Use with caution in patients with deficiency.
[Modern Research] Clinical reports on acute mastitis: Semen Citri Reticulatae and Loofah Sponge (Si Gua Luo), each 30 g, decocted twice and taken orally in two doses daily, one dose per day.
