[Overview] This herb is also known as Madouling Vine and Qingmuxiang Vine. It is the aerial part of Aristolochiadebilis Sieb. et Zucc. or Aristolochia contorta Bunge, plants of the Aristolochiaceae family. It is mainly produced in Zhejiang, Hubei, Jiangsu, Hebei, Shaanxi, and other regions. The aerial parts are harvested in autumn, dried in the sun, and bundled.

[Properties] Bitter in taste, warm in nature. Enters the liver, spleen, and kidney meridians.

[Actions] Promotes qi circulation and activates blood, facilitates dampness elimination and unblocks the channels.

[Applications]
1. Used for various pains caused by qi stagnation and blood stasis, such as epigastric and abdominal pain, hernia pain, and postpartum abdominal pain. For epigastric and abdominal pain, it is combined with Xiangfu (Cyperus rotundus) and Wuyao (Lindera aggregata); for hernia pain, combined with Yanhusuo (Corydalis yanhusuo), Wuzhuyu (Evodia rutaecarpa), and Xiaohuixiang (Fennel); for postpartum abdominal pain, combined with Danggui (Angelica sinensis), Guizhi (Cinnamomum cassia twig), Fuling (Poria), and Yimucao (Leonurus japonicus).
2. Used for pregnancy edema, can be combined with Xiangfu, Chenpi (Citrus peel), Wuyao, and Mugua (Chaenomeles speciosa), as in the formula Tianxian San (天仙散). If edema is due to spleen deficiency with dampness predominance, add Baizhu (Atractylodes macrocephala), Fuling, and Dafu Pi (Areca peel).
3. Used for wind-damp painful obstruction, gout, and hemiplegia after stroke; can be taken as a single herb soaked in wine or combined with other blood-activating and channel-unblocking herbs such as Hongteng (Sargentodoxa cuneata), Dinggongteng (Erythrina variegata), Gouteng (Uncaria rhynchophylla), and Rendongteng (Lonicera japonica vine).
